Tragic Murder of TV Celebrity, Singer and L Cosplayer Christina Grimmie

13/6/2016

Our interest here in singer, songwriter and US NBC The Voice competitor Christina Grimmie is rather peripheral, which makes news of her fatal shooting by a previously unacquainted killer no less saddening.

Police investigators in Orlando, Florida, have yet to uncover a motive for gunman Kevin James Loibl's actions. He had apparently set out to kill her on June 10th 2016, armed with several weapons and travelling two hours across the US state to reach her.

Outside concert hall The Plaza Live, Christina Grimmie and rock band Before You Exit were signing autographs, posing for pictures and chatting with those who had come to watch them perform that night. Or merely to be there meeting them afterwards.  A voracious updater of social media (wherein she'd grown to fame as a star on YouTube), Christina had encouraged folk to pop down and say hello, if they could.  It was fun, exciting, a happy and friendly event; eye-witnesses said she opened her arms to hug Loibl as he approached upon his turn to do so.

He opened fire and killed her, then shot himself dead too.

A sickening, senseless story, as I'm certain most here will agree.  But what has it got to do with us?

The fact is that Christina Grimmie was one of us.  For all her celebrity and meet and greet press of crowds vying for a moment in her company, she was also a Death Note fan.  Who got excited when she was able to wear her L cosplay while recording a music video.

That's what she took to social media about at the time, that's what she wanted to share - not the fact that she was making the promo for her own song Shrug.

A notion no doubt met wryly by more than a few of us with the ability to chuck an L cosplay together from the contents of our wardrobes, but not film a music video to transmit to thousands, who wanted to actually hear us sing our songs.
Christina Grimmie Death Note L cosplay for Shrug
Seventy weeks before she was killed, Christina Grimmie sat with friends and watched the last episode of the Death Note anime.  As so many of us have done, and like us all, it was viewed with gleeful anticipation, as her Instagram snapshot confirms.  An event worth recording.  An excuse for a party.  One of us.

Watching the Death Note ending.......

A video posted by Christina Grimmie (@therealgrimmie) on Feb 6, 2015 at 1:18pm PST

Christina Grimmie Death Note computer background

Just over a year ago, she was showing us Mello, L and Near on her computer's wallpaper and telling us it makes her happy.  I don't know about you, but I've got Mello on my PC background image and it makes me happy.

For the record, I've also got Matt as a theme on my browser.  It also makes me happy.

The purpose of all this?  No matter how remote and star-studded, scratch the surface and we're all the same.  If not in the specifics, then the generalities certainly: one fan likes Mello, another L, a third is Team Kira, a fourth is for Mikami, a fifth prefers Naruto and the last can't stand manga/anime, but has a passion for NASCAR.

In the passion, we find points of commonality with all humankind, regardless of its focus.  In tears and love too, we touch the same, no matter that we might not grieve or infatuate our hearts upon identical loves.  Different subjects irritate; things distastefully seen or grinding sentiments heard might drive us to fury according to our own perspectives; yet she share with all that well of anger ready to propel us into attempting to improve our world as per our lights.

No-one is so alien to our very own humanity that they should be hunted down and shoot for whatever motive.

Christina Grimmie might have been a glittering star in the limelight and a vivacious entertainer. But she was also somebody's daughter, somebody's sister - her brother nearly died trying to save her - somebody's friend and confidante.

And she was a Death Note fan just like us. We are bereft, one down tonight, and that has to do with us all.

Fantastic Misa-Misa Cosplay by Costa Rican Artisan MolecularAgatha

Death Note Misa Amane cosplayer MolecularAgatha
Death Note cosplayer MolecularAgatha shares her Misa Amane for this dedicated Month of Second Kira
Photography by Mario Melendez at Universidad de Costa Rica, originally published on DeviantART.
Hailing from Costa Rica, MolecularAgatha's creativity as a cosplayer is absolutely astounding.  She's a designer by vocation; a facet that tells in the attention to detail on display, throughout a great range of costumes created by and for herself.  MolecularAgatha is a veteran cosplayer of many years standing.

So successful in fact that she's now gone professional - available as a cosmodel to show off costumes created by others too - with more information to be found about that on her Facebook profile page.  A model with an element of the actress about her costumed roles?  This makes MolecularAgatha practically a real life Misa-Misa, give or take the serial killing and shinigami eyes.  I hope. We didn't actually check.

In addition to Death Note, MolecularAgatha appears to cosplay as anything and everything.  Her DeviantART homepage alone has recent images covering genres in gaming, fashion, classic tales, movies, television and manga.  She leaps from Princess Peach to Steampunk, Alice in Wonderland to Sailor Venus - and every picture looks exquisite; every costume fabulous.

If you've just come back from San Salvador Comic Con 2016, you might have seen her there on stage as Emma Frost or Link.  If not, then there's always her online galleries to wander through and gape.  In the meanwhile enjoy her Misa Misa cosplay, pictured above, and hopefully there will be more Death Note costumes added to her collections in the near future too.

Learn How to Cosplay Misa Amane from Squad Six Cosplayers Own Second Kira - Lara Sizemore

Death Note cosplayers Misa Amane by Lara and Matsuda by Justin

Squad Six Cosplayers Lara and Justin
don their Misa and Matsuda

As part of our Misa Amane Month on Death Note News, we've been tracking down those Misa-Misa cosplayers wherever they may squee.

They are coming here to share their tips, advice and anecdotes all about getting into costume as Death Note's Misa, so that you may gain insights into creating your own Second Kira cosplay.

Occasional Death Note News columnist Lara Sizemore is the founder member of Squad Six Cosplayers.

As the name implies, she is a veteran cosplayer within numerous different genres and fandoms.

Recently this included a handmade Misa Amane costume to wear while Lara and her squad hosted a Death Note 10th Anniversary panel at Ichibancon 2016.

You are in good hands.

Lara Sizemore Advises on Cosplaying Misa Amane from Death Note

Death Note cosplayers Lara Sizemore as Misa Amane and Cayanna Carma as Light Yagami

Have you cosplayed Misa now or in the past?
Yes - in the past

Any anecdotes about your experiences cosplaying Misa?
Dressed in a common Misa cosplay I get recognition especially from other Misa cosplayers.

However, dressed in her 'suicide dress' the only time I was recognized as Misa was during the Death Note panel I hosted.

How would you go about creating a costume for Misa Amane?
Each of Misa's outfits are precise with many details. You have to look at each individually to truly figure them out.

That's not to say you can't buy generic Gothic clothing and a blonde wig to cosplay Misa. But if you were going the extra mile to be accurate and make the outfits, her clothing is specific to her and there are many details that people overlook - from skull brooches to corset work on the backs of her dresses.

What clothing and/or props do you feel are essential Misa costume items?
Her necklaces and earrings. Misa wears her hair a few different ways (and in the manga her hair is fuller sometimes than others) but she always has specific jewelry.

Is there more to cosplaying Misa than the outfit? (Look/behaviour etc.)
You don't necessarily HAVE to act like Misa in Misa cosplay, but it's always fun to put on that bubbly personality and leap after Light cosplayers at conventions.

For me cosplaying Misa is more about the accuracy of the costume but for others it is more just because they love the character and I've even heard a lot of people say that they cosplay Death Note characters because "it's simple" but those people usually just thrift for their costumes.
What's your professional opinion about ready-made Misa outfits, such as those in the Death Note News Cosplay Store? Any other pieces in there decent enough for a Misa-Misa cosplay? (Be honest!)
I personally would never buy a Misa cosplay. I much prefer making her clothing and enjoy being able to say that I made it and it's accurate. Looking at the Death Note News store, the options are very nice and the most accurate I've seen for pre-made costumes.

last tips for anyone reading, who wishes to create their Misa cosplay from scratch?
From scratch? Make sure you pay close attention to your reference photos. Pick out every detail before you sketch it out and don't forget about her jewelry.

Fabulous Quillsh Wammy Cosplay by Guess Greenleaf from CupofSquirrel

29/4/2016

US cosplay collective CupofSquirrel have turned their attention to Death Note characters in costume.

And that includes Watari cosplay courtesy of Guess Greenleaf - pictured right with fellow group member Rhyme Lawliet as, well, L.

Moreover, Guess has popped in to explain to us how we can create a Wammy costume of our very own.

All the win!
Discover more from CupofSquirrel cosplayers on their YouTube channel.

CupofSquirrel's Guess Greenleaf on How to Cosplay Quillsh Wammy

Have you cosplayed Quillsh Wammy now or in the past?
Yes - currently.

Any anecdotes about your experiences cosplaying Mr Wammy?
I was Watari for a video that my L was making for their YouTube channel. Even though I was only in a few scenes, it was a joy to be Watari.

His personality is special to me--he is caring, kind, and intelligent.

What clothing and/or props do you feel are essential Watari costume items?
I collected a second-hand suit for Watari to wear. His outfit is very simple, which makes him easy to cosplay for people just beginning.

His hair is swept back, so I purchased a lace front wig. Watari is defined by his glorious moustache, so I purchased a nice one from a local theatre store.

I feel that it is nice for Watari cosplayers to have a similar hat, so on occasion I use a vintage fedora my mom found at a garage sale.

To complete the cosplay, simple ageing make-up was important for me, because I am a young woman instead of an old man.

Is there more to cosplaying Wammy than the outfit? (Look/behaviour etc.)
More important than the quality of your Watari cosplay is his demeanour. People will know you are Watari if you carry yourself with pride and are deliberate in your actions. He has a serious kindness about him that is essential to his character.

What's your professional opinion about ready-made Death Note costumes, such as those in our Cosplay Store? Any pieces in there decent enough for a Mr Wammy cosplay? (Be honest!)
I didn't see any Watari cosplay items in your store, so I don't think these would work out!  [Ooops! ~ Matti]  Ready-made cosplay items are nice for people who do not have the skills to make things themselves.

When I started cosplaying Watari, I did not have the skills to make a suit coat, which is why I bought one from a thrift store. When buying ready-made items, the most important thing is how they fit you. If you want it to look like it was made specifically for you, you should probably go with a site that takes your measurements to make sure you have a nice fitting costume.

If not anything there, where would YOU source items to cosplay Quillsh Wammy?
I would go to a local thrift store and try on the nicest looking men's suits there.

Any last tips for anyone reading, who wishes to create their Watari cosplay from scratch?
Spend extra time on make-up and wig/moustaches. These parts of your costume will give a recognizable face to your cosplay.

Wearing Mr Wammy: Finnish Cosplayer Kinky Mattila with Watari Costume Tips

13/4/2016

Death Note Wammy cosplayer Kinky Mattila

Death Note Wammy cosplayed by Kinky Mattila
Another Death Note character event;
another cosplayer willing
to spill the beans on
how to dress like them.

This time it's
Month of Mr Wammy
on Death Note News and
Kinky Mattila is here
to tell you all how to
don your Watari wear
in style.

Kinky Mattila has been cosplaying since 2005 with her group Team Fabulous Awesome. Over in their native Finland, TFA have been creating costumes within a raft of fandoms, including Death Note, of course.  As the image above amply demonstrates, that means Wammy cosplay too (flanked by his wards Mello and Near courtesy of fellow TFA members).

TFA show no sign of waning after more than a decade in costume - 'still doing it happily', Kinky Mattila confirms - with plenty of pictures to fill the TFA-Finland cosplay gallery on DeviantART.  But first she has advice to share on cosplaying Mr Wammy.

Death Note Costume Tips: How to Cosplay Watari by Kinky Mattila

Have you cosplayed Quillsh Wammy now or in the past?
Yes - in the past.

Any anecdotes about your experiences cosplaying Mr Wammy?
It was my very first male cosplay with a moustache.

My friends were creating a Death Note cosplay group and the only available character left at that time was Watari. It was suggested that I should cosplay with his face hidden,  but I decided to be wild and his face visible with a moustache.

At that time I didn't know you could buy fake moustaches, so I made my own - sacrificing my white wig for it. It looked kinda okay and, cos I don't use make up, so also that time I didn't use either.

I liked cosplaying Watari. It was a nice experience. Plus I heard I was the first Watari cosplayer here in Finland at the Tracon 2 cosplay event!

For the first time, I got asked for so many pictures to be taken of me. I was so overwhelmed by the attention I received.

I just loved that cosplay.  Also that Watari costume made me want to keep on cosplaying, no matter if I got noticed or not.

Kinky Mattila's Watari cosplay - originally posted to her
DeviantART gallery, with her variation on a theme here
How would you go about creating a costume for Watari/Mr Wammy?
Find at a flea market some suit that fits you and buy some white shirts for men.  They are not that expensive here - about like 10euros. Buy some fake moustaches, and a pair of Santa's glasses, then colour them grey. Add men's shoes, of course.

A nice wig is also good to get, but your own hair works too.

What clothing and/or props do you feel are essential Watari costume items?
Men's suit.

Is there more to cosplaying Wammy than the outfit? (Look/behaviour etc.)
Just to have fun.  That is most important to me and nothing else. <3

What's your professional opinion about ready-made Death Note costumes, such as those in our Cosplay Store? Any pieces in there decent enough for a Mr Wammy cosplay? (Be honest!)
I haven't looked for any custom made Death Note costumes; but the ones that I found right now, most of them seemed really nice and need just a little bit of changing.

Any last tips for anyone reading, who wishes to create their Watari cosplay from scratch?
Go look for a cheap men's suit and start from that. :D  Nowadays it is way easier to look like a man than it was then (when I cosplayed Watari).

But do it!!! GO FOR IT!"!!! You can rock it. :D

Thank You All Who Contributed to Month of Matsuda on Death Note News!

5/4/2016

Another epic monthly event! Redeemed after a shaky start by all who flooded in with their submissions to make this a focus worthy of the character himself.

The archives will show that Death Note Month of Touta Matsuda was an unparalleled success!

Good fight all.

So what went wrong at the beginning (and most of the middle) to make this event move so slowly?  Then in true Matsuda style speed up unfathomably towards the end, and in the nick of time to save the day.

While Death Note News has a plethora of writers, columnists, researchers and the occasional guest penning articles too, it only has one person to actually press the button to publish their considerable output.

If she gets carted off to hospital in the back of an ambulance, then everything grinds to an ignoble halt.

We've spotted the obvious flaw in our administrative set up; and Matti is completely fine now.  Once back at her desk, the contributions for Matsuda Month could flow once more and fabulousness ensued.
Touta Matsuda Death Note month

Thanks are Owed to All Who Participated in Our Matsui Month Event

All due applause and accolades are directed towards:

Sakiko Rau - who kicked us off with an essay on why she (and we) should like Matsuda from Death Note. She will also be jumping on board as a regular columnist writing from a Japanese perspective.  You heard it here first.

Lua
- who did so much in the background to keep the home fires burning, as well as penning a philosophical analysis of Touta Matsuda's importance within the Death Note narrative.

Aerial Skye - who gave us cosplay advice for Matsuda costume creation.

All on the Death Note News Community Touta Matsuda Pinterest Board, for maintaining a steady flow of interesting images and links whatever the month.

Lei K - who turned her considerable talent to Touta Matsuda artwork especially for this event.

Silent Reaper - who allowed us to share her classic comic strip Matsuda's Rant.

Deacon (and the Tuxedo Team), especially Beyond Infinity/Jin - who let us publish their photographs of an amazing Matsui cosplayer.

Ziferonan - who gave us full rein to plunder an extensive collection of Matsuda fan-art, fan-fiction and cosplay too.

Stella Meyer - who not only sent in her Matsuda artwork, but answered questions providing insight and tips on creating the same.

Liam Dodd - who brought an air of the academe to proceedings with a scientific examination of Death Note's infamous Matsuda rescue with a mattress.

Emerald-Moonlight - who let us loose on her gallery and permitted the republication of three pieces of her Matsuda art.

MRSJeevas - who wrote Matsu fan-fiction for this event, though that's not nearly all, considering that in another guise, she is Matti - who researched, edited, proof-read, wrote and caused a backlog on much else that was published this month.

Tarot Mikami - who took us once again into the depths of the tarot's secrets, this time with a distinctly Matsuda Death Note flavour in regard for his monthly focus.

And, of course, all who read and commented, shared links and discussed these articles elsewhere.

And prepare to do it all again, this time with the focus on Wammy.

Exploring Ziferonan's Matsuda of the Imagination in Cosplay, Art and Fics

1/4/2016

Prepare to rifle through the zany gallery of Ziferonan, a Russian Touta Matsuda fan with an all-rounder's
talent in expression for his Death Note idol.  He said we could take what we wanted. So we did.

There's plenty more where that came from.

In fact, it was hard work to whittle down which pieces of Matsuda fan-art we wanted to nick from Ziferonan's extensive collection.

Particularly when so many of them were very imaginative and unique in their aspect. The sort of Death Note art you don't tend to find anywhere else in the fandom, and we like that in a gallery!

To discover more Death Note Matsuda art from the mind and vision of Ziferonan, divert yourself onto DeviantART, where gems like these await.

Puppet - Death Note Matsuda Fan-Fiction by Ziferonan

Death Note Matsuda art Puppet on a Rose by Ziferonan - Death Note News
Not all of Ziferonan's Matsuda artwork stands alone. Some support his Death Note fan-fiction featuring Touta Matsuda too.

Part one of Puppet starts here with Sleepwalker, and continues on into a four part tale.

What you're seeing alongside here is the cover art to Ziferonan's Puppet Matsuda fan-fiction, with the picture alternatively titled Puppet on a Rose, when it was posted to DeviantART.

In Ziferonan's story Matsui is beset by the demands of Ryuzaki and Watari, leaving the sanctuary of the Kira investigation headquarters in search of cake.  Yet outside presents itself as a most surreal world, given Matsuda's sleepless state and the ever-present worry and trauma of seeing colleagues killed, while knowing himself to be upon a suicide mission, probably.

Not the quest for cake.  The Kira case.

But what catches his eye at four am isn't a bakery, nor a lead on the hunt for a serial killer.  Richly glowing, bright within the dreary early morning air is a toy shop, and Matsuda enters.

... Touta felt himself falling somewhere very very deep away from reality...

Puppet is Ziferonan's first fan-fiction story in English.  It was originally written in his native Russian and translated so the English-speaking fandom might enjoy it too.

Read it from the Puppet: Sleepwalker link given above, then on to:

Puppet 2: Missing
Puppet 3: Spring Dream
and concluding with Puppet 4: Care

Albeit apparently accidentally.  He was aiming for Mikami at the time.

What do you reckon?  The scariest Matsuda ever envisaged?   Or much scope for thoughtful contemplation about what the Death Note world would have looked like, if it HAD been Touta Matsuda who picked up a shinigami's notebook?   Way more fan-fiction in the plot bunny right there!

~ Thank you for the pick of your gallery, Ziferonan.  Didn't use nearly all that we would have liked to!

Fantastic Death Note Touta Matsuda Cosplay by Deacon and the Tuxedo Team

Filipino cosplayer Deacon, aka DorkyDea, portrays the perfect Matsuda.  Proving once more that it's not so much the costume, but the stance, expression and becoming your character, which make the most successful cosplay.
DorkyDea Death Note cosplay Matsuda
Deacon is part of a collection of cosplaying friends as The Tuxedo Team, who are based in the Philippines.  By all accounts, he even aped Matsuda's personality there at the Death Note photoshoot, brimming with energy and enthusiasm; keeping everyone in laughter with his joking antics.

Deacon has been inactive for a good while as a cosplayer - Death Note or otherwise - and has made all of his social networking private.  We had to get permission from his friend Jin - aka BeyondInfinity - to republish the above.  Nevertheless, you can still view his DorkyDea profile on DeviantART, as well as reading BeyondInfinity's account of the Death Note cosplay shoot by the extended Tuxedo Team.

Even the group's 'reject' Death Note Matsuda cosplay photographs are amazing!

It's been pointed out to us that Taylor Swift was sporting a Death Note Mello hair-do at the 58th Annual Grammy Music Awards last month.  Take a look, see what you think:

I don't know.  It wouldn't be the first time that Taylor Swift's Death Note fan credentials have been highlighted.  But on this occasion it does all seem a little tenuous!

Ohio Schoolgirl Cosplayer Suspended After Attending School Fandom Costume Fundraiser Dressed as Light Yagami with Death Note Prop

23/3/2016

Lakewood Middle School, Hebron, Ohio
I've seen some nonsensical school Death Note replica over-reactions in my time, but this one truly takes the biscuit.  Or should that be the cookie? As needless to say, this is the USA.

An anime loving girl - aged 12-14 - has been given a three day suspension from Lakewood Middle School in Hebron, Licking County, Ohio, for turning up clutching a reproduction Death Note.

Inside were listed the names of some of her friends.  Unlike many previous cases, this wasn't a lashing out silently at bullies situation.  This was a bit of fun, attempting to freak out her buddies.

Because here's the rub:  it was a 'spirit day'.  A fund-raising event for the school, whereby pupils could don the costume of their favourite fandom character.  She arrived cosplaying Light Yagami.

She'd spent the weekend creating the notebook as a prop.  It was part of the outfit.
Half the friends listed in it admitted that they also owned replica Death Notes.  They were fans too.  Though reports have been careful to add that none of them had written each other's names in it.

The girl in question didn't anticipate any hassle.  Probably because she saw no danger, only fun.  On account of the fact that a shinigami's notebook of death is a fictitious thing; and anyway, she didn't own one.  She'd crafted it herself in her bedroom.  No Ryuk in attendance.

No-one was ever going to die.

The fund-raiser occurred on March 14th 2016. During the morning, the girl had misplaced her Death Note - which is described as little more than a booklet or pamphlet - and a teacher found it.  Flicked through, discovered the names and raised the alarm.  All they needed to do then was identify who owned the prop.

They evidently knew enough about Death Note to link the item with the student in Light Yagami cosplay.

She got in trouble over coming as Kira (well, as Kira WITH notebook) and was told not to mention the forthcoming discipline to anyone.  However, being a pre-teen and probably chaffing under the absurdity of the situation, she 'vented' to a male schoolmate - whose name was also on the list.

He freaked out and phoned his parents, one of whom came to the school to 'voice their concerns'.

Next thing you know, a local sheriff had also arrived at the school - possibly called in by the parent - to investigate the threat.  One report says she was charged with 'inducing panic'; another says no charges were filed at all.

Nevertheless a three day suspension from school it was, and the rest of the world rolls its eyes with utter incredulity.

Aerial Sky Shares Advice on Cosplaying Matsuda from Death Note

14/3/2016

Death Note News - Aerial Sky cosplaying Beyond Birthday
For Month of Matsuda on Death Note News, we've looked long and hard across cyber-space for cosplayers to share their tips on donning Touta Matuda costume.

Here to start us off is Aerial Sky!

There she is cosplaying Beyond Birthday from Death Note's Another Note, as seen in older pictures on her Instagram account:  @dncosplayer25.

She's at pains to let us know that her cosplay has improved greatly since those days.  And further adds,

"I've been into cosplaying for about two years now, and it's my favorite thing to do when I have spare time. Currently I am finishing up my Matt cosplay, and I've cosplayed L and Beyond Birthday, all from Death Note. I plan to cosplay more when I have more time and when my parents accept this habit of mine XD."

So what does she have to say about Matsuda cosplay?  Read on!

How to Cosplay Death Note's Matsuda by Aerial Sky

Have you cosplayed Matsuda now or in the past?
No - never

Is there any reason that you haven't considered cosplay for Touta Matsuda?
I have considered it, mainly because he's the comic relief of the story, and because he's a precious little cinnamon roll XD I think I will stick with the characters I do best. Those being Matt, L, Beyond Birthday, Jeff the Killer, and maybe the occasional Kira/Light.

How would you go about creating a costume for Touta Matsuda?
I would go to Goodwill or some sort of thrift store and buy a suit. There's no need to spend a bunch of money for something you could find easily.

What clothing and/or props do you feel are essential Matsuda costume items?
A black or grey suit, and definitely a good sense of humor.

Is there more to cosplaying Matsuda than the outfit? (Look/behaviour etc.)
You have to have a good sense of humor, as well as a good personality. Don't be afraid to get really into character.

He acts like a goofball, and is about the average high schooler XD

What's your professional opinion about ready-made Touta Matsuda outfits, such as those in the Death Note News Cosplay Store? Any other pieces in there decent enough for a Matsuda cosplay? (Be honest!)
I would definitely go to a thrift shop first and see if I could get something cheaper. Custom made things are so much more expensive.

If not anything there, where would YOU source items to cosplay Matsuda?
Goodwill. And maybe your own closet if you have nice business clothes.

Any last tips for anyone reading, who wishes to create their Matsuda cosplay from scratch?
Get a good quality wig, and just be patient. Good things come to those who wait. :)

Veteran Death Note Cosplayer blAIRbender Advises on Creating Kira in Costume

29/2/2016

Brillant Mail Jeevas cosplayer blAIRbender

blAIRbender passed over Mail Jeevas to
cosplay a mere God of the New World

For Month of Light Yagami, we're corralling all the Kira cosplayers into Death Note News to share their tips on being God.
(Remember when blAIRbender sold out Matt and started cosplaying that Yagami bloke instead?

We do.  The entire Mello and Matt fandom haven't stopped crying yet. The sadness. The horror. The betrayal in loss of all comfort and hope. The opportunities to troll during Gami-given moments like this - when the threat of a Force10 tempest couldn't give us pause to resist.

Which is probably why Blair wrote her own introduction, instead of leaving me notes to compile one for her, like everyone else.)

Here now to shed light on costuming Death Note's protagonist is blAIRbender - a cosplayer who has long-since had Kira all sewn up.
blAIRbender cosplaying Kira Death Note

Human of the Year - Light
blAIRbender cosplays Kira
I've been a cosplayer since the summer of 2008. I started as a Death Note cosplayer, mostly cosplaying as Matt and L. Then I made a Mello and a Light cosplay. I did the four of them for a few years, then started branching out into other series like Fullmetal Alchemist, Red Garden, and Venture Bros.

A few years ago, I made a Cersei Lannister cosplay from the show Game of Thrones. Nowadays I mostly just wear that and traipse around conventions with a group of Game of Thrones cosplayers called the Throne Bros. Oh, and I've also started cosplaying as Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games.

Matt makes an appearance every now and again, but for the most part, I don't do Death Note cosplay anymore.

Aside from cosplay things, I've been attending a university in PA where I'm studying costuming. In the fall, I was the assistant costume designer for the production of Ibsen's Ghosts that we did, which was an amazing experience. This semester we are doing Shakespeare's The Tempest and I have the honor of being one of three costume designers for it (thank God because there are a TON of characters in it). It's a lot of work, but I love it.

blAIRbender on How to Make a Light Yagami Costume with Goodwill Alone

Do you/have you cosplayed Kira now or in the past?
Yes - in the past

Any anecdotes about your experiences cosplaying Light?
Heh, Light was always fun to do. I would usually cosplay him while with Maru-Light and Anda-chan. Any time the three of us get together, some kind of hilarity ensues.

Light was never someone I would act necessarily in character as while wearing. I mean, I would more or less act like a caricature of his personality.

Especially when with Maru and Anda, we would make a lot of references to Patrick Bateman from American Psycho and a bunch of jokes surrounding that. The more bullshitting and banter, the better.

How would you go about creating a costume for Light Yagami?
I actually bought almost my entire Light cosplay from a Goodwill. He wears normal clothes, unlike the people I cosplay as nowadays. I was still in high school when I first cosplayed as him, so I had a very tight budget. Somehow I got lucky and found some pretty nice quality stuff that cost next to nothing.

(Oh!  Hold on! That's also Matt trolling by cosplaying as Kira in a lampshade being light Light.  OMG! blAIRbender never sold out! She subverted from the inside.  HaX0R3d teh God of teh nub world! Gf! How could we ever have doubted her?  Matt Jeevas cosplayer supreme, inside AND out!)
What's Up People? Death Note cosplayers

What's Up, People? blAIRbender Light Yagami cosplayer,
with L (Maru-Light), Mello (Anda-Chan) and Matt (KitsuneCowgirl)
What clothing and/or props do you feel are essential Light Yagami costume items?
A Death Note, red contacts, and a beautiful wig.

Is there more to cosplaying Kira than the outfit? (Look/behaviour etc.)
Well, I mean I would always act like an narcissistic asshole as Light. It's so much more fun that way. More opportunities for hilarious bullshitting.

What's your professional opinion about ready-made Light Yagami outfits, such as those in the Death Note News Cosplay Store? Any other pieces in there decent enough for a Kira cosplay? (Be honest!)
Never ever ever buy ready-made Light cosplays online. His clothes aren't unique. He just wears normal clothes that you could easily find in any store. It doesn't make sense to break the bank trying to cosplay as Light.

Where would YOU source items to cosplay Light Yagami?
Honestly, just go to a Goodwill or some cheap clothing store. It's so cheap and easy and you can find really nice looking stuff without spending a bunch of money.

Any last tips for anyone reading, who wishes to create their Kira cosplay from scratch?
Make-up, friends. It's crazy how much of a difference a little bit of contouring can make.

Gallery of Kira Cosplay by Fausto the Endless, and Also of L

27/2/2016

One of Russia's most remarkable anime cosplayers has allowed Death Note News to republish
stunning photographs from her Death Note cosplay gallery.

We've already glimpsed Fausto the Endless once, illustrating the introductory header in our mid-event round up for Month of Kira art and articles.  Here's another image from that same shoot.  There will soon be a whole lot more from her portfolio, which make this one look quite prosaic in comparison.

Poor Fausto the Endless really wanted to join in further by filling in the questionnaire prepared for Light Yagami cosplayers. But time wasn't on our side.

Hopefully we'll get the chance to grab her again for advice on costuming as Kira. Not to mention sharing cosplay staging tips, given those elaborate recreations of famous Death Note scenes that adorn her environment.

There will be plenty of opportunity forthcoming in one of our later Death Note Month of... events.  It would be particularly appropriate, to invite further input from Fausto the Endless, when we get around to hosting Month of L.

Take a good, hard look at these amazing pictures from her cosplayed Death Note scenes. Captured here in handcuffs, depicting Death Note during L's bout of demonstrating dodgy detention techniques and a wanton disregard for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But how many separate cosplayers do you count?

Just the one. But that one is brilliant.  The wonder of modern technology allowing us to see Fausto the Endless in costume as BOTH Light Yagami and L simultaneously. Be honest here, even knowing that, can YOU tell that the Death Note characters are cosplayed by the same talented lady?

Though granted she elicited some help from her friends for this reproduction of Death Note manga cover art in cosplay.  The red-shrouded figures of death are played by Milana Tepesh, Yuna Kairi and Luka - members of Russia's WTF Cosband, which is headed by Fausto the Endless herself.

You can read more about how they pulled off such intricately cosplayed Death Note images, in a September 2014 report on DeviantART about their photoshoot.

Otherwise, catch up with Fausto and her WTF Cosband on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Ask; or, if you speak Russian, Fausto The Endless on VK and WTF Cosband's Official Page there too.  All of those locations show more Death Note cosplay pictures from the collective not shown above, in addition to those from all their other costumed endeavours.

Colour us impressed.

Goddess of the Killer Kira Cosplay - Maru-Light on Making Light Yagami Gleam

23/2/2016

Kira: Justice cosplay by Maru-Light

Kira: Justice cosplay by Maru-Light (DeviantART)
We're tracking the Kira cosplayers across the internet, and inviting them to shed light on creating great Death Note costumes.

Here to tell you how to do justice to
the God of the new world is someone who cosplayed Kira longer than Light Yagami did
~ experienced mass murdering deity
(and occasional doll maker)
Maru-Light.

For someone with an ego-centric, megalomaniac second self, Maru-Light is surprisingly succinct when talking about her non-psychopathic, ordinary New Jersey lady persona, "I started cosplaying in 2007 with Anda-Chan. We cosplayed Death Note together from 2008 - 2011. DN characters I've done include Light/Kira, L, Beyond Birthday, Mello & Matt."

She's being too modest.  You can view her Death Note gallery on DeviantART to see what I mean and judge for yourself.  (And yeah, we go back years - I'd not refer to every Kira cosplayer as a genocidal, God complex ridden lunatic. That would be rude.)

Kira Maru-Light Death Note cosplay

Kira Maru-Light (DeviantART)
Do you/have you cosplayed Kira now or in the past?
Yes - in the past

Any anecdotes about your experiences cosplaying Light?
I fell in love with Light the moment I watched the first (subbed) episode of Death Note. He was truly the first anime cosplay I really had a passion to do. More for who he was as a character, than his outfit, clearly. In my opinion, the core of Light/Kira cosplay is in the attitude.

(Funny story - It's amazing how many times I was asked if my red contact lenses were my real eyes. Normally, I'd answer "yes.")

(Extra question, ninja'ed in late - did you ever make a deal with a Death God to enable you to see people's true names and the date of their demise, for just the cost of half your remaining life span?   Oh!  She's gone...  Back to the questions and answers she left us with.)

How would you go about creating a costume for Light Yagami?

As a girl cosplaying Light, my principle concerns were always that the clothes looked good.

Many people tend to opt for men's styles, and I tried that at first, but decided it didn't look right on me. Light wears normal clothes essentially, the suits need to look crisp like he does, not oversized or not tailored. So I got dress wear that fit me well.

I've always felt that the core of a Light/Kira cosplay is in the attitude. You're the God of a New World. Act like it. ;)

What clothing and/or props do you feel are essential Light Yagami costume items?
Light's wig was always my most essential and challenging element. I went through so many wigs for Light, before I finally found the one I settled on, and it did involve dying to get his auburn color just how I preferred it (with more Kira redness than less.)

Props are pretty easy to come by and basic - the Death Note, the handcuffs, the watch, the apple, an L cosplayer.
Is there more to cosplaying Kira than the outfit? (Look/behaviour etc.)
It's not the most technical, but that's actually what makes Death Note cosplay so tricky. Especially with Light (or L) when the "costume" is really just normal clothes so to speak.

I've had so many people tell me it didn't "count" as cosplay because of the clothes. Whereas I think the lack of an elaborate costume makes it more challenging to pull off well. Yes, anyone can put on a suit, but you need an extra boost of arrogance, self confidence, ego and God complex to pull off a believable Kira.

Kira is in your presentation, not just your props and clothes.

What's your professional opinion about ready-made Light Yagami outfits, such as those in the Death Note News Cosplay Store? Any other pieces in there decent enough for a Kira cosplay? (Be honest!)
I don't have much experience with the ready-made stuff. I bought my clothes from normal places with the full intention they would f

it me properly and look good. That's a big part of the confidence element for cosplaying Kira, imo. I have too much social anxiety to not feel comfortable in something that may not fit well.

I don't have anything against anyone who buys the pre-made stuff. Whatever works for you. I hate the elitist cosplay attitudes, do what you want. Enjoy, have fun, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

If not anything there, where would YOU source items to cosplay Light Yagami?
I bought all of my Light-wear at normal clothing stores. Dress pants and blazers, dress shirts. I ran up a bill at Express for a time (but I got to wear the same stuff to the office too, so it was worth it. LOL)

I scoured all sorts of wig retailers for the perfect Light wig, it was an endless mission. I went through 2 major wigs, before finding the one I loved the most at the end of my cosplay days. It made the whole look worth it.

Any last tips for anyone reading, who wishes to create their Kira cosplay from scratch?
MAKE-UP. Really, don't neglect your face! All the clothes and wigs in the world won't seal the final touch like make-up.

In the end, I was using tape to change the shape of my facial features, I used female-to-male make-up techniques, I used eye-liner to make my eyes pop. Make-up is very important. Don't neglect it.

I personally did bind as well. I won't advise binding for health reasons, but I didn't cosplay without strapping down my D-cups. Just make sure if you bind, bind carefully and be mindful of technique. It's easy to cause serious injury if you don't bind correctly.

Squad Six Cosplayers - New Panel at Triad Anime Convention March 2016

21/2/2016

Sewing, and Props, and Wigs... Oh My! Panel at Triad Anime Con 2016
Only generally related to Death Note this, Squad Six Cosplayers' Lara has given us the heads up that she'll be part of an ensemble costuming quartet hosting a panel at Triad Anime Convention this March.   Sewing, and Props, and Wigs... Oh My! is an all-encompassing cosplay advisory gig, with freely available tips on just about anything you ever wanted to know about dressing up as your favourite manga/anime character, plus a few things you didn't know to ask.

However, it is worth mentioning the panel here, because there are at least two known Death Note cosplayers on it.  Hence attendee questions in that direction are likely to be more than adequately answered.

Lara will also be joining the rest of Squad Six Cosplayers the following night for Blasting Off Again! Team Rocket panel, celebrating two decades of Pokémon.
