It isn't a massive amount that US Death Note director Adam Wingard has to say that's of particular interest to us. Nevertheless Collider's Perri Nemiroff asked about future projects, in an interview that was otherwise about Wingard's pilot TV show Outcast. Wingard answered, "I'm doing an adaptation of Death Note. I'm in the process of doing that." That's all! Though it's nice to have random confirmation that everything is still happening. The comment occurs around the 9.48 minute mark in the above embedded interview from ‘Outcast’: Adam Wingard on the Differences between Directing a Pilot & Feature Film, posted yesterday - March 17th 2016 - on Collider. |

Not long ago, I watched a video by YouTuber Onision. In this video, Onision basically says that Light Yagami's mistake is not considering PREVENTING crime, as opposed to punishing criminals who've ALREADY done bad things. And by preventing crime, I mean writing for example, "Anyone who THINKS of committing a crime will be killed by the power of this notebook, before they get to actually fulfil their intentions." I disagree, because preventing crimes by killing anyone who intends to commit them makes deaths looks like coincidences or normal deaths. In other words, if you were to hear of the death of a certain person of which no one knows the intentions, it would've NEVER occurred to you there's someone out there "passing righteous judgement", which we all know is one of Light's ultimate goals, to make Kira famous and worshipped.
I think yes, because all that sentence written in Death Note needs in order to be applied is a strong willingness to kill, which is present in the example. But then again, that's just my wicked over-analysis and my own point-of-view to which you are free to reply.

Some things are just too genius, and indeed epic, not to share. LaymanIX's 'Light Yagami Plays...' series of YouTube videos fits that bill entirely. May I simply recommend that you fill out a bowl of popcorn, pour a tipple or two, turn the volume up high and enjoy. Hell yes, enjoy. Ever puzzled on how to pronounce a Death Note Wammy kid's name? Worse still, there is no anime to fall back upon if you're stuck on how to say the name of an original character from the Wammy House. A few individuals from the He Moves Me Differently forum (Mello/Matt fan-fiction community) met up in Skype last night. That was the subject which soon emerged, particularly from Lua, who understands a dozen languages and therefore is quite keen on getting these things right. The upshot was a video guide, which has just been uploaded onto YouTube to take the mystery out of pronouncing Wammy House names. At least as they appear in the It Matters series, though a fair scattering also turn up in Death Note, whence they were lifted in the first place.
Even if you don't know the stories wherein many of these characters derive, you may be able to correct the pronunciation of their names, particularly if you speak Congolese-French, Azerbaijan, Greek, Croatian and one or two more.
It was only a matter of time before fan uploaded recordings of a televised Death Note the Musical performance showed up on-line.
Several individuals have done just that on YouTube, though I imagine it won't be long before the copyright holders shoot them down. Especially if DVD sales are a thing in mind for the future. But first check out the trailer, as shown on WOWOW Channel in Japan, to advertise upcoming theatrical performances of the musical Death Note on TV.

Find more Death Note News articles about the Death Note Musical via our Pinterest board: Finally, we have news about Death Note's lost audio-visual project, with information graciously shared by one of its major participants. Testimony straight from the horse's mouth, as it were, which would have been fabulous to pass on last April, when we were all talking about it. No-one can blame Supermbro, L's voice actor in this licensed Death Note fan-based telling. He had his side of things typed up and sent to me exactly when he said he would. Then it waited, and waited, and waited unseen by me and therefore neither was it relayed to you. My apologies to you and Supermbro too. His email got caught in the almighty mess up described before. Better late than never, eh? This particular Death Note project was mentioned back in January 2015, when Beyond the Voice Actors listed a casting call for voice actors. It all seemed very exciting - a fan directed Death Note production, which had been already been given the official nod to proceed. Through the comments on our blog entry discussing it, news filtered through that Light and L's actors had been cast. Others too. Then nothing. The project had been scrapped, without a word in explanation. If that seemed sudden to us lot looking on, it was nothing to that experienced by the cast. Many of whom had already recorded their lines, promptly upon receiving the script, and had spent the the intervening weeks expecting to hear that the project had now gone live. Screenshot taken from Supermbro's playful DN Outtakes footage Here's how Supermbro told it at the time: The whole thing started when I signed up for a website called Casting Call Club. I had been interested in giving a crack at voice acting for a while and saw it as an opportunity to start my career. That not all was a complete loss, his voice acting for Death Note's L was uploaded onto YouTube. You may hear his lines below. I was rather impressed by his audio likeness to Alessandro Juliani, L voice actor for the official English dub of Death Note. What do you think? This telling seems rather after the fact now, with Supermbro kindly accepting my explanations and apologies for the lateness in response. He's already moved on to bigger and better things - currently providing character voices for Clan of Daedryth, aired as abridged adaptations on YouTube's Lord Daedryth channel. But he agreed that I could still pass on his experience in the Death Note project, when, for a time, Supermbro was L. Though I have to add some of his delightful comments in much more recent conversation with me: Wow! It has been sometime since I have even thought of this role and it's actually cool to think about again... With L being the first thing I was ever cast for it kinda hurt... Anyone need an L? We've got one going spare! And a wonderful one at that.
Thank you very much, Supermbro, and once again sorry it took so long to get your information out!

Matti's Audiobook of Annals of Fear in Context
Back in 2011, while I was just starting to pen the opening chapters of Walls Came Tumbling Down, a group of my readers gathered in Livestream to hear me read aloud part of a previous novel.
It was my contribution to a Guns and Games gala day. Lodged within a full schedule of events, encompassing over 24 hours worth of Something Nice for Mello/Matt Fans to Enjoy. The entire community was involved. Each member of that Mello and Matt fan-club - on the now defunct MangaBullet - bringing something to the table. A Mello cosplayer streamed herself recreating his burn scar, using some substance which looked awfully realistic when it had dried on. MxM artists shared tips on capturing the characteristics of the couple in pen strokes and shading. Some writers held tutorials on how to make Mello and Matt live again in prose. And I read stories. Well, one story, and only in a smattering of chapters lifted from the middle. Nevertheless, until I eventually get off my backside and fill in the blanks with recordings, it's the best you're going to get in terms of an audio version of Annals of Fear. But you never know. I get asked it often enough. Maybe one day I'll even turn up with the goods. |
Did you all catch this? I know the Redditors did, as it recently topped r/deathnote, thus alerting me to its existence.
Brad Swaile is the Canadian voice actor who gave us the English dubbed tones of Light Yagami. It's his fault that we all keep harking on about eating potato chips and laughing manically. Though his counterparts around the world also did a fabulous job on the latter.
It seems that Kira's English language voice actor has tried his hand at fan producing an AMV on YouTube, and he chose a Death Note theme as his inaugural tune. That's Zetsubou Billy for the win, as illustrated with clips chosen by Brad Swaile. Nice one!
Oh! And incidentally, today is Brad's birthday. Happy returns of the day from all of us here at Death Note News!

We've already seen various crowd filmed footage of the moment when Takeshi Obata got his pen out at New York Comic Con. However, Viz Media were able to get much closer than most - the perk of organizing the panel in the first place, plus the Death Note artist being there as their guest.
Enjoy this unimpeded, over the artist's shoulder view, as Obata draws L and shinigami Ryuk live in front of a New York crowd. Freehand. Mine wouldn't come close if I used a blooming stencil!

I've just spent a rather amused few minutes watching all of the Death Note character spotlights by The Enpsychopedia. For long-time fans of the anime, there will be nothing earth-shatteringly revealing here, but that doesn't matter. They're all hilarious! The playlist is embedded here, so just press play for some giggles. Then visit them on YouTube to like and leave lovely comments. |
Ok, that headline might have been slightly misleading! It's not precisely Mello who you'll find ranting and sharing Death Note news on YouTube, but it's one of his biggest fans. Long term members of the Death Note fandom are bound to have run into MihaelKeehl (aka Mihael J Keehl, aka Chase Keelan, aka Chase Keehl) in places like MangaBullet, FanFiction.net, Adult Fan-Fiction and DeviantART before now. His avatar on some of those sites is reproduced left. He's just launched his own Death Note YouTube channel to keep us updated with all that's happened officially and with the fandom alike. I've embedded his introductory vlog above. If you wish to subscribe to hear video Death Note news, then hop on over there. |
