Squad Six Cosplayers - New Panel at Triad Anime Convention March 2016

Sewing, and Props, and Wigs... Oh My! Panel at Triad Anime Con 2016
Only generally related to Death Note this, Squad Six Cosplayers' Lara has given us the heads up that she'll be part of an ensemble costuming quartet hosting a panel at Triad Anime Convention this March.   Sewing, and Props, and Wigs... Oh My! is an all-encompassing cosplay advisory gig, with freely available tips on just about anything you ever wanted to know about dressing up as your favourite manga/anime character, plus a few things you didn't know to ask.

However, it is worth mentioning the panel here, because there are at least two known Death Note cosplayers on it.  Hence attendee questions in that direction are likely to be more than adequately answered.

Lara will also be joining the rest of Squad Six Cosplayers the following night for Blasting Off Again! Team Rocket panel, celebrating two decades of Pokémon.

Cayanna Carma cosplay Kira Death Note News

We've been on the hunt across cyberspace
for Light Yagami cosplayers, willing to share their secrets via a questionnaire written just for this purpose.

The latest to provide some insight into
her cosplay of Kira is the USA's
Cayanna Carma

- who also kindly posed in costume with a banner, welcoming you all to this Month of Kira on Death Note News; as seen in the announcement of its launch.

In Light Yagami cosplay, Cayanna Carma Death Note News Month of Kira
Cayanna Carma is a 24 year old designer - quite well known on the US Eastern seaboard anime convention circuit for her elaborate and immersive characterisation whilst cosplaying - who has only recently taken on the role of Light Yagami in costume.  She writes, 'I have handmade all of my cosplays, and I work hard to become who I cosplay as. I'm from a huge family that don't have an interest in cosplay, but that doesn't stop me from doing the best I can be at cons.'

Keep up with Cayanna Carma's Kira cosplay and all the rest on Facebook.  Now here is she with her experience and tips on cosplaying Kira.

Cayanna Carma on Creating a Kira Cosplay

Do you/have you cosplayed Kira now or in the past?
Yes - currently.

Have you any anecdotes about your experiences cosplaying Light?
Scared the daylights out of a lot of people when asking for a signature.

It was honestly very fun, because I helped a cosplay group "Squad Six" and worked in a group of other Death Note characters.

Cosplaying as Light Yagami, I got a chance to play Chess with an L cosplayer and I won! 😏

How would you go about creating a costume for Light Yagami?
I draft, so I normally see things in my head and make it really.

What clothing and/or props do you feel are essential Light Yagami costume items?
Bag of chips, Death Note, apple, flip phone and handcuffs.
Is there more to cosplaying Kira than the outfit? (Look/behaviour etc.)
Oh yes~ I had to keep that small smirk for the entire time while in cosplay. Also writing violently and trimming my nails down to look like I chew them.

What's your professional opinion about ready-made Light Yagami outfits, such as those in the Death Note News Cosplay Store? Any other pieces in there decent enough for a Kira cosplay? (Be honest!)
I honestly enjoy people who buy cosplay or Make it. As long as you have fun in the cosplay I am all for any cosplay.

If not anything there, where would YOU source items to cosplay Light Yagami?
I guess you could go to a clothing store or a yard sell and hope you get lucky

Any last tips for anyone reading, who wishes to create their Kira cosplay from scratch?
Have fun building it.

Squad Six Cosplayers Share Their Thoughts on How to Cosplay Kira

5/2/2016

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note's Misa, Matsuda and Near

Lara, Justin and Lindz from Squad Six Cosplayers as Misa, Matsuda and Near

We've been scouring the fandom to find Death Note cosplayers willing to share their expertise on assembling Kira costume.

Not all of them have actually cosplayed Light, but they will have the necessary know-how to go about it, should they wish.  And they are here to advise you on doing the same.

Kicking us off
Squad Six Cosplayers!

Squad Six Cosplayers are a collective based in North Carolina, USA.  They recently hosted a Death Note panel at Ichibancon 7, and kept a diary here at Death Note News to let us know how they went about organizing it.  The group are known for making all of their own costumes from scratch, including a recent venture into Death Note cosplay for the panel event.

You can catch up with them on Tumblr or Facebook, but first they have some questions to answering about how they would go about cosplaying Kira.

Squad Six Cosplayers on How to Cosplay Light Yagami

Is there any reason that you haven't considered cosplay for Light Yagami?

The male members of Squad Six Cosplayers have not considered cosplaying Light. They have all been heard saying variations of
'Light is to simple and there are other characters that are more fun to portray'.

How would you go about creating a costume for Light Yagami?

Most likely we would buy a dress shirt because that's a complicated sewing process but we would defiantly make the tie from a matte silk  and  then make the blazer from a tan cotton and  the pants from brown cotton. Thought blazers are difficult, the lapels specifically, it always feels better to make your own cosplay.

What clothing and/or props do you feel are essential Light Yagami costume items?

At least the pants and the iconic red tie. A main focus of cosplay is to be recognized as the character so if you are cosplaying someone like Light you need to stick with his  recognizable outfit as well as a Death Note. Even though Light himself wouldn't carry his Death Note around, people see it and instantly recognize the cosplayer where as if you're in just a pair of brown pants, a white shirt, and a red tie people might think twice before approaching you.

Is there more to cosplaying Kira than the outfit?  (Look/behaviour etc.)

Oh yes! One of the biggest peeves about Death Note cosplay in general is when you hear people say that Death Note cosplay is lazy or easy. Cosplaying Light isn't just about wearing the right clothes and having the right hair or wig, you have to have that secretive but charming attitude too! No Death Note cosplay is easy and it does take time and money to make even the simplest of items.

What's your professional opinion about ready-made Light Yagami outfits, such as those in the Death Note News Cosplay Store?  Any other pieces in there decent enough for a Kira cosplay? (Be honest!)

The items in the Death Note News Cosplay Store are lovely and a wonderful option for those that do not sew. Another alternative would be going to a thrift store searching for the items. You don't have to make your costumes to cosplay, it's just our personal preferred method.

If not any of the above, where would YOU source items to cosplay Light Yagami?

The Death Note News Cosplay Store has a good option for a Light Yagami cosplay. You should never have to pay anything over 80 USD for a cosplay like his, not including the wig. Wig shopping can be difficult especially for men who have larger heads, so my advice on that is to be sure you know your head measurements  while you're shopping online and look for cosplayer reviews if you're buying from sites like Amazon. It's okay to go cheap with wigs but it's a personal recommendation not to spend less than 10 USD on a wig online because you want a decent head of hair and the more expensive the more realistic a wig is going to look.

Any last tips for anyone reading, who wishes to create their Kira cosplay from scratch?

Make sure to practice blazer lapels before trying to work on the actual blazer, pay attention to pants patterns because the waistline must add up, and don't be afraid to style a wig. A little cutting and a little Got2b hairspray will go a long way to making the costume go from eh to YEAH!

The Cosplayer Chronicles: Squad Six Cosplayers' Death Note Panel at Ichibancon

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note News

We've been following the fortunes of
Squad Six Cosplayers,
as they prepared to host
Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary
panel at Ichibancon 7
in North Carolina.

Here is how they got on.

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note panel Ichibancon 7

Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary panel at Icibancon 7
Squad Six Cosplayers were at Ichibancon, one of the largest anime and manga conventions in North Carolina, USA.  There, in Events 4 room, we held our Death Note review panel - Resurrecting L - to mark the 10th anniversary since the manga's first chapter was published in Weekly Shonen Jump.

Since then, Ohba and Obata's story has become an institution, we hope we did it justice.

Ichibancon's Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary panel happened on January 1st 2016, at 11pm.  We should have finished by midnight, but the buzz was awesome and we were having so much fun discussing the new media developments for Death Note.  We almost ran well over time!

Here's how it all played out.  But first the cosplay and, created from scratch, a dress for Misa Amane.

Each of Squad Six Cosplayers' Death Note panel members arrived for the event in full Death Note cosplay.  Every part of which had been created especially for Ichibancon during the run up to the convention.

Founder Lara Sizemore opted to cosplay Misa Amane.  She explained, "I chose to do Misa's Last dress/suicide dress instead of her usual ensemble as sort of a nod to our title. It took me two weeks to complete the dress but I am very proud of it. The ribbons are all appliquéd on."  She makes it sound so easy.

As for the rest, they were in Death Note costume too!

The event was very well attended. Despite its late hour, three quarters of the venue was full.

It was great fun!  With a tremendous amount of audience participation too.

We had five grand prize questions with the winners awarded a very L-inspired Death Note prize.  It was a dessert glass with his iconic monograph printed on the side.

Inside was a pile of chocolate/apple flavoured candy, plus two bubblegums with wrappers sporting bright red eyes - shinigami eyes, if we ever saw them. In addition, those correctly guessing the answer received a packet of chips (crisps for our European readers) and an apple.

Nor were we the only ones in cosplay.  There were several others in the audience, including a few in Death Note cosplay.

Cayanna Carma Takes on Light Yagami for Ichibancon's Death Note Panel

One of our great coups was to have famed cosplayer Cayanna Carma as our special guest at the Death Note Ichibancon panel.

She is renowned throughout the North Carolinian cosplay circuit for the realism that she brings to her roles. Cayanna Carma didn't just dress as Light Yagami, she became him.

It was in the subtleties, of which no photograph will ever adequately convey, no matter how many taken of her in action.

It really felt like Kira sitting there, ramrod straight and charming. Watching everyone and reacting, as Light Yagami might believably react, to all that occurred.  Serious, even in the face of Sara's shenanigans as L.

Her presence went down a storm with the crowd, just as we hoped it would. In fact, many of those there might have attended simply to watch Cayanna Carma cosplay Kira.

Sitting alongside her on the panel, interacting like we were with Light Yagami himself, was certainly a pleasure for Squad Six Cosplayers.

Once again, we thank Cayanna Carma for being our very special guest at Ichibancon 7's Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary panel, and hope that these pictures provide some glimpse of what it was like watching our star cosplayer perform on the night.
They included the L cosplayer pictured left - our old friend Christian Morrison in costume and character - and another Misa Misa too.
Meanwhile, we technically had two L cosplayers on the stage with us.

After all, Logan was cosplaying as Beyond Birthday cosplaying L - Another Note does say that it took layers of cosmetics and a certain outfit before BB looked anything like the detective he was trying to emulate.  That's cosplaying!

With Sara there too, as our group's actual L cosplayer, having lots of fun with Squad Six Cosplayers' special guest for the evening, Cayanna Carma as Light Yagami.

The Cosplayer Chronicles: Death Note Misa's Wig in the Spotlight

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note News Cosplayer Chronicles banner

As they prepare to host a
Death Note 10th Anniversary panel
at North Carolina's Ichibancon 7,
we get the updates on their progress in
The Cosplayer Chronicles
by
Squad Six Cosplayers

It's not just the Panel itself that needs to be organised.  We are cosplayers - reasonably professional ones at that, insofar as these things can be measured with oodles of fun thrown in as the main event - therefore we need to look the part.  Act it too.  As well as physique allows, Squad Six Cosplayers must take the stage as near clones to those characters we choose to inhabit for a night.

That in mind, Lara has spent the holidays working on her Death Note Misa costume.  She cosplayed the character before, hence knows that her old wig is not up to scratch.  One should not have to redo those derpy pigtails ten times an hour!

This year then, she will be entering Ichibancon with a thicker, better quality Misa Misa wig; totally replacing the old with something new.  It was expensive, but worth it.  Here's your sneak preview of the hairy part of Lara's Misa Death Note cosplay, as it was restyled to match Second Kira's locks.

Meanwhile, it's crunch time here with just a couple of days to go and all hands to the deck to make our anime con panel run smoothly.  Wish us luck!  And if you are attending 2016 Ichibancon 7, we'll see you there!

Squad Six Cosplayers will be hosting Resurrecting L - Death Note 10th Anniversary Panel at Ichibancon 2016, January 1st 11pm-midnight, in Events 4.

The Cosplayer Chronicles: New Timeslot and Exclusive Look at the Flyer for Death Note Panel at Ichibancon Anime Convention

11/12/2015

The Cosplayer Chronicles banner on Death Note News

Resurrecting L - an anime con panel celebrating Death Note's 10th Anniversary - is set to be held on New Year's Day 2016, at Ichibancon 7 in North Carolina, USA.

Gearing up to host it, and here journalling
their preparations along the way, are its organisers
 Squad Six Cosplayers.
It's been a fraught few days with technical issues, mostly surrounding internet access, but that's all over now. We're plugged in and raring to go with the first major bit of news being that Ichibancon has just released its official schedule.  We're on it of course, but there's a surprise attached. Squad Six Cosplayers' Death Note panel - Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary - has been bumped up an hour.

We're now on at 11pm, instead of midnight, on January 1st 2016.  Same venue, same room, just a different time.  A fine excuse to redesign the poster advertising our Death Note appreciation panel.  Though a frantic scramble to alert all who have already promoted it for us.

Next up is the flyer that everyone will receive as they walk into the panel.  You get to see it before they do!  It's a four page flyer, folded concertina style. In the box, on the inner page, is where a piece of candy will be placed for the guests to enjoy as we present. We'll also have candy and Death Note themed prizes throughout the presentation.  L eat your heart out!  We're resurrecting him indeed.

The Cosplayer Chronicles:  Ichibancon Death Note Panellists Squad Six Cosplayers Update on their Special Guest Cayanna Carma (New Column for Death Note News)

Brand, new feature for Death Note News -  Squad Six Cosplayers keep a diary as they prepare for their Death Note panel at US anime convention, Ichibancon 2016.  In Death Note cosplay, of course!
Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note Notes The Cosplayer Chronicles
There's a lot of work to be done, if Squad Six Cosplayers are going to be ready to take the stage at Ichibancon - one of North Carolina's largest anime conventions - at midnight on January 1st 2016.  It's not only our Death Note panel in which we are performing, but out and about too.  On show just by being there, because we will be in full cosplay.

And those costumes need to be designed and made ahead of time.  We have a reputation to uphold.  It's not good enough merely to have those clothes fitting properly, we have to become the characters in our Death Note cosplay.  But in that, we've elicited a little help.

Cayanna Carma to Cosplay Kira at Ichibancon 2016 Death Note Panel

Cayanna Carma will be Squad Six Cosplayers' special guest at Ichibancon. Joining forces at our Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary panel.

She will be cosplaying Light Yagami for us, and we just know that will bring in a huge crowd.

Cayanna Carma is known through the convention community for her ability to encompass the attitude and personality of each character she portrays. She's just fantastic.  She's a 24 year old that can draft her own cosplay patterns, taught herself to sew, and can piece together shoes, props, pants, shirts, gloves, and even wigs with no issues.

Though Cayanna Carma will be taking on Kira at the Ichibancon anime convention, she's MOST known for her cosplay from Kuroshitsuji and Naruto. You can check out her ability to become each cosplayed character on her Facebook page, though nothing beats seeing her in action.

Now all Squad Six Cosplayers have to do is live up to that precedence too. No pressure then!

We all really appreciate this opportunity and are so excited to share our progress with Death Note News readers, because Death Note is one work of art we are all very passionate about.

Squad Six Cosplayers Host Death Note Panel at Ichibancon 2016

28/11/2015

How would you like to celebrate New Year with Death Note?  Lara Sizemore from Squad Six Cosplayers has been in touch to announce that attendees at North Carolina's Ichibancon anime convention can do just that.

Squad Six Cosplayers are celebrating ten years of Death Note with a panel hosted at Ichibancon 2016.  Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary Panel will take a look back over the whole series, review its updates, chuck around some Death Note related trivia and much more for the fandom to enjoy.
Ichibancon 2016 Death Note panel by Squad Six Cosplayers

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note panel at Ichibancon 2016
Squad Six Cosplayers are a well-known collective upon the US Eastern board anime circuit.  They've been around since 2003 and create all their own costumes from scratch. Their signature panel is Undercover with Kuroshitsuji, which also provides much inspiration for their most famous cosplay. The group ensure that their Kuroshitsuji cosplay is high on historical accuracy, which is fabulous for a qualified historian like myself to hear!

And now they're turning their attention to Death Note.  Happy days.

Ichibancon 2016 will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel Concord, in Concord, North Carolina, USA, between December 31st-January 3rd 2016.  Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary Panel will happen in the convention's Events 4 room, at midnight on January 1st 2016.

Nowhere is this more true than in anime related cosplay, wherein its much more than a mile spent traipsing in another's footwear. It's probably several, and not just the shoes either.

All day spent in character at conventions, or clambering into awkward places to position oneself for photographs - after minutely studying the manga or anime for clues on how to appear recognizably convincing - can certainly provide insights into the persona being aped.

So much so that you have to ask yourself - if it happens to me, then it certainly has to have been experienced by the original character too.

The old adage states that none may be understood, until a mile has been walked in their shoes.

Blinding Detail in Death Note Matt Cosplay

blAIRbender cosplay Matt Death Note

blAIRbender cosplays Matt
Like the anecdote shared by a friend, blAIRbender, following her quest to create a cosplay for Death Note's Matt that was exact in every detail.

Many hours were spent scrutinizing images from the manga; sourcing and moulding materials; then engaged in painstaking assembly. Finally she held a perfect replica of Matt's goggles. It was only when she came to wear them - particularly over several hours - that she realized Matt must spend a lot of time demisting said goggles. The slightest hint of perspiration saw the lenses fogged from edge to edge.
As far as goggle fog goes, it takes about two to five minutes after putting them on initially, depending on how warm you are at the time and the room temperature. After that, they are constantly foggy on the inside. They will fog in all weather conditions. My dad recently mentioned that there is a spray that exists that would prevent fogging, but I haven't looked into it any further.
~
blAIRbender, Matt Cosplayer, in conversation with Death Note News
Also his peripheral vision was non-existent.
God knows why he favoured that sidewards look, while keeping Takada under surveillance. Misdirecting her gun-toting louts into thinking he could see them too?

Though it would explain how Matt was able to miss all of those wide escape routes in the spaces between encircling cars. For want of opaque side panels on fashionable googles, thus fatally assuming that he was surrounded.

Mello Cosplayers Concentrate on Chocolate

There's also the friend cosplaying Mello, who emerged smug and filled with insights from a taxing day at an anime/manga convention.

Though it had been fun, the organizers hadn't quite got the hang of crowd control - bottlenecks formed wherever the flow beached (regularly); heavy-handed security unsympathetically carried out long-winded checks at every juncture; rooms not allocated with any apparent common sense - and the venue became increasingly hot and stuffy.

Moreover, food vendors were not spread out, resulting reputedly Hellish conditions, as people crammed into a single section of the arena looking to dine. Each of them subject to long waits in queues for food, tables or simply somewhere to sit.  Over-heating, factitious, shouted at by security.
My Mello cosplayer informed me that she was the only person in her group not losing focus and fainting with hunger.

She was the one with a bar of chocolate to hand, which kept the energy levels raised nicely.

Maybe that's why Mello risks all to ensure he has his confectionery to hand (fifteen boxes at least)?  Perhaps he's prone to bouts of low blood sugar. The Mafia would be terrible company within which to loose concentration, or collapse in a heap on the floor.

Or he's worked out the advantage in always having food to hand, when you never know what meals will be delayed and what leadership opportunities could arise on a bite of chocolate.

Risk Assessment for Rosaries in Mello Cosplay

Death Note's Mello with handcuffs

Mello's rosary was caught on his handcuffs again
Best one I heard is a little too risque to share here. Let's just say the cosplay didn't end with bedtime, but did scream to a sudden halt shortly thereon.

Instead I'll mention the friend of a friend who ended up in an emergency room, due to the crucifix - on the end of her cosplay Mello rosary - swinging up to nearly take her eye out, after it got caught on the furry costume of a tall man in front. A strange combination of her shrieking, him stopping dead and a sudden crowd surge from behind did the rest.

Such things must occur to Mello too, though I can't help thinking that when they do, somebody could well end up dead.
You'd be amazed on what a rosary can get stuck on, trapped inside or otherwise threaten to garrotte its wearer in any number of inventive ways.

Unless you habitually cosplay Death Note's Mello, in which case none of the above even counts as news anymore. You've been there; not only got the t-shirt but also the thread burn scar on the back of your neck.

Nor do you have any patience with those who blithely state that the rosary should have snapped.

You also have snapping rosary stories. Plus a plentiful supply of 'nearly snapped Mello cosplay rosary' scares to add into the general mix.

Don't Misa-Misa the Sunscreen!

Misa Amane always looks stylish, with her fashionable togs revealing random bits of her body to the rays of the sun.

So what would happen if she'd forgotten to apply the sunscreen before she went out?  Misa cosplayer Ayane Maro found out, when she did just that at Tokyo's Comic Market.

The full story (with pics) is told in Tweets above from the lady herself, or check out a version in English by Brian Ashcraft (Cosplayer Forgets Something Very Important (Kotaku, August 17th 2015)).

Got any Death Note cosplay tales of your own?  Or facets unknown about your character until you donned their clothes?

Comment and let us know about them!  Such things are the fodder of fan fiction, entertaining in their own right and might even tip off new cosplayers in the Death Note community, before they make the same errors common to all who preceded them.

In the meantime, there's a collection of cosplay Death Note items available on our website for those perfecting or putting their costume together.
