Kira Cosplayer Lhinnor Kuro on How to Get into Costume as Light Yagami

19/2/2016

Lhinnor Kuro cosplays Light Yagami
As part of a series for Death Note Month of Kira, we're delving into the nitty-gritty of cosplaying Light Yagami.

To tell us how to get into costume and character as Light Yagami is someone doing just that in her native Netherlands.

Take it away Lhinnor Kuro!
Lhinnor Kuro is part of the costuming collective Special Snowflakes Cosplay. You can view her character transformations at Lhinnor Cosplay on Facebook.

She writes, "Hello! I am a cosplayer from the Netherlands and go by the name of Lhinnor Kuro. I recently started cosplaying Light Yagami. Death Note is one of my favourite anime, and I really enjoy cosplaying Light :D I only cosplayed him once at a convention so far, so I am kind of a beginner Light cosplayer."

Lhinnor Kuro Lets Us In on the Secret of Cosplaying Light Yagami

Do you/have you cosplayed Kira now or in the past?
Yes - currently

Any anecdotes about your experiences cosplaying Light?
When people introduce themselves I usually also ask their last name. Sometimes they know what I am up to but usually they don't. Or they say I know what you just did there :p

How would you go about creating a costume for Light Yagami?
I bought all my clothing from a second hand store.

What clothing and/or props do you feel are essential Light Yagami costume items?
I think it is nice to have a Death Note with me. And I also bought a plastic apple, which is great as a prop for pictures.

Is there more to cosplaying Kira than the outfit? (Look/behaviour etc.)
I think the most important thing is that you have fun while cosplaying Kira.

It is also a lot of fun if friends cosplay Death Note characters with you :D I was lucky that friends of mine decided to cosplay L and Misa with me ^^

What's your professional opinion about ready-made Light Yagami outfits, such as those in the Death Note News Cosplay Store? Any other pieces in there decent enough for a Kira cosplay? (Be honest!)
I don't like most of the ready-made Light Yagami outfits to be honest.

The quality of the outfits looks bad in my opinion. And the stores charge way too much for the outfit. (I am talking about the cosplay online stores that I visit).

I think second-hand stores give you higher quality items within a reasonable price.

Or you could make the clothes yourself ^^

Any last tips for anyone reading, who wishes to create their Kira cosplay from scratch?
Have fun with making your costume :D

It's been an exciting month so far, with much more to follow.  Let's recap!

Kira Seiyū Interviewed by You!

Anime actors Brad Swaile, Sergio Zamora and Kim Hasper are answering your questions backstage as we speak.  They ALL played Light Yagami, providing the voice for him in the English, Spanish (European) and German dubs of the Death Note anime respectively.

Each actor has a new profile page - which will later transform into their individual interviews conducted by all who sent in queries to be asked.  The buttons beneath their pictures below will take you to that seiyū's profile too.

To make life easier on all, we even translated the question form into English, Spanish and German.  Though any of those languages may be used to ask what you will of all three Light Yagami voice actors.

All about Raito: Kira Profiles, Light Yagami Analyses, Papers, Discussions & More

Death Note News writers and readers alike have been sharing their thoughts and research expertise on all things Yagami. Thus far, we've read profiles penned by us:

Then Death Note News columnist Lucas King was here to discuss and play us his piano version of Light's Theme from the anime. Whilst also ninja-ing in an appeal on behalf of a friend.

Meanwhile, an old friend of all who once haunted MangaBullet - the very epitome there of a Light Yagami fan - took centre-stage in a (not coincidentally) very relevant Focus on a Fan for this Month of Kira.

Who better than Maru-Light for that?

Where the Kira Fans Meet

In our aim to uncover the communities, forums, groups and other places where Light Yagami fans hang out - and to give such areas a little boost of publicity too - we had ComicVine's Light Yagami Forum respond, while also bigging up our own Pinterest Community Board for Kira fans.

Let us know if there are more out there!

Light Yagami Cosplayers Unite!

We've had Kira cosplay galore!  In addition to the fabulous God of the New World above by Fausto the Endless (of whom more later in the month), the whole thing kicked off with Cayanna Carma as Light Yagami welcoming us to this event.

She returned later to answer questions about cosplaying Kira, as did Squad Six Cosplayers and Light Yagami.  We're still to hear from Maru-Light, whose insight is already in and queued waiting to be published.

Paging the Writers of Light Yagami Fan-Fiction

There's been slightly less of a response from those penning Kira fan-fiction.  Matti gave it a go with Mu Amongst Fools; while the ubiquitous Maru-Light came clean on whatever happened to her co-authored Death Note novels The Redeemer Series.  Fascinating, even if you never read the books!

However, there may be more interest now that we've finally got our Death Note fan-fiction author questions up and running.  Will you be sharing your writing secrets there?

Drawing in the Kira Fan Artists

The lovely Tate Forkel started us off with the fan drawn Light Yagami artwork.  Arrowchild added her own to the Redeemer piece already mentioned above. But then nothing more.

Come on Kira artists!  We're all dying to see what you have created.  To a given value of 'dying' obviously; thought we'd better mention that, given the subject and circumstances.  You may be interested to note that you have also now got a series of questions aimed at uncovering your artistic know-how!

Did We Miss Anything?

There's much more to come from whence all of this derived, so keep reading and don't forget that everything Light Yagami related this month is being archived for a permanent display: The C0llected Archives of Death Note News Month of Light Yagami.

And next month, Matsuda.  Are you ready?

Cayanna Carma cosplay Kira Death Note News

We've been on the hunt across cyberspace
for Light Yagami cosplayers, willing to share their secrets via a questionnaire written just for this purpose.

The latest to provide some insight into
her cosplay of Kira is the USA's
Cayanna Carma

- who also kindly posed in costume with a banner, welcoming you all to this Month of Kira on Death Note News; as seen in the announcement of its launch.

In Light Yagami cosplay, Cayanna Carma Death Note News Month of Kira
Cayanna Carma is a 24 year old designer - quite well known on the US Eastern seaboard anime convention circuit for her elaborate and immersive characterisation whilst cosplaying - who has only recently taken on the role of Light Yagami in costume.  She writes, 'I have handmade all of my cosplays, and I work hard to become who I cosplay as. I'm from a huge family that don't have an interest in cosplay, but that doesn't stop me from doing the best I can be at cons.'

Keep up with Cayanna Carma's Kira cosplay and all the rest on Facebook.  Now here is she with her experience and tips on cosplaying Kira.

Cayanna Carma on Creating a Kira Cosplay

Do you/have you cosplayed Kira now or in the past?
Yes - currently.

Have you any anecdotes about your experiences cosplaying Light?
Scared the daylights out of a lot of people when asking for a signature.

It was honestly very fun, because I helped a cosplay group "Squad Six" and worked in a group of other Death Note characters.

Cosplaying as Light Yagami, I got a chance to play Chess with an L cosplayer and I won! 😏

How would you go about creating a costume for Light Yagami?
I draft, so I normally see things in my head and make it really.

What clothing and/or props do you feel are essential Light Yagami costume items?
Bag of chips, Death Note, apple, flip phone and handcuffs.
Is there more to cosplaying Kira than the outfit? (Look/behaviour etc.)
Oh yes~ I had to keep that small smirk for the entire time while in cosplay. Also writing violently and trimming my nails down to look like I chew them.

What's your professional opinion about ready-made Light Yagami outfits, such as those in the Death Note News Cosplay Store? Any other pieces in there decent enough for a Kira cosplay? (Be honest!)
I honestly enjoy people who buy cosplay or Make it. As long as you have fun in the cosplay I am all for any cosplay.

If not anything there, where would YOU source items to cosplay Light Yagami?
I guess you could go to a clothing store or a yard sell and hope you get lucky

Any last tips for anyone reading, who wishes to create their Kira cosplay from scratch?
Have fun building it.

Focus on a Fan: Maru-Light - Kira Dollmaker, Light Yagami Costumer and More

8/2/2016

Welcome to our Focus on a Fan feature - this time coming as we launch a new monthly fandom focus upon characters in our favourite manga.  So who could we hunt down to do justice to this Death Note Month of Light Yagami?  Only one contender really.

The rest of this post is given over to the Goddess of our Old World, the inimitable Maru-Light!

Hello all~ So I was Maru-Light for a brief stint on MangaBullet (but an ongoing stint on DeviantArt).

The lovely Matilda hunted me down recently after a 5-year absence from the Death Note world, to inform me that it’s Kira month on Death Note News and could I please contribute to the Focus on a Fan, to which I couldn’t say no.

So about me, (which admittedly is kind of weird, but here it goes).

I devotedly cosplayed Light/Kira (in addition to L, B, Mello & Matt) between the years 2008 – 2011, and featured my pix both on MangaBullet (briefly) and DA, where most of it still is.

I founded the Kira Worshippers Group there, (which could probably use some new activity).

I actually wasn’t aware MangaBullet had a demise, and I haven’t been very active on DA either lately. When I am, it’s mostly through my Ball Joint Doll face-up work, and no longer my cosplay.

These days I mostly haunt a forum for an original novel series Anda-Chan and I have been working on. I have really limited my involvement in fandoms outside my own thing.

I lost the cosplay bug a few cycles after we stopped cosplaying Death Note (really was my biggest passion, and since then being inspired to cosplay has never been as strong.) My “bros” (MB’s Anda-Chan & Blairbender) and I went through a brief stint cosplaying My Chemical Romance (I was Gerard, that was an odd experience) and flirted with doing Hannibal but never got there.

Anda and I segued into a bit of Joker & Harley (so.much.make-up) and then Star Wars (even.more.make-up), before moving into an apartment together, which suddenly featured a new round of rent and a depleted source of cosplay funds. That, and getting to cons lately, has been a tall order.

So while it was a good run and fun while it lasted, we’ve since moved on to stranger pastures.
Maru Light Kira Cosplay
We entered into the bizarre, but Zenful world of urbexing for a bit (that’s urban exploring for laymen), which roughly translated into avoiding-getting-arrested-while-exploring-abandoned-asylums-and-taking-photographs-of-urban-decay.

On one such excursion, while covered in roof soot at an abandoned Victorian Mental Institution in upstate New York, Anda whipped out a ring and popped the question—so we’re engaged now.
Maru Light and Anda-Chan. Photography by A.C. Santos
I guess you can say we’re flirting with wedding plans, which usually goes from “I want an awesome VICTORIAN wedding in a mansion” to “meh, lets just do pizza and call it a day.”

Think maybe we’ll do a court ceremony and blow the money on a trip to the Caribbean instead (which admittedly is one of our addictions and seems like a more responsible investment of funds, unless the wedding becomes the best Halloween Party Ever, in which case we can justify the expense.)

And besides, I have my heart set on a replica of Mina Harker’s red dress from Dracula as my wedding scrubs, so maybe I’ll get the dress, do a court ceremony, eat the pizza and then go to the Caribbean. Sounds like a plan.
Cosplay L and Mello - Maru-Light and Anda--Chan

When Maru-Light and Anda-Chan were L and Mello. *little tear* The Good Old Days.
ANYWAY, so we’re living together and still writing together. We used to pour all of our efforts into a Death Note fanfic tome called The Redeemer Series, but I just sent Matti an article longer than anyone wants to read about why we don’t write that anymore.

[Coming soon to a Death Note News near you - Matti]

Instead, we’ve been hard at work on an original series called Breaking Across Devotion, which we’re adamant we're going to publish; otherwise my purpose on this planet is pretty moot.  Write or bust, basically.

The “B-A-D” series is literally about rock stars and serial killers, and - to prove life weirdly imitates art - as of the last year+, Anda and I have been working in the music business, as a concert photographer and copywriter respectively.

It’s been a pretty incredible experience. We go to at least 4 shows a month, sometimes more, sometimes less. Anda shoots rock stars in the photo pit [Still Mello! - Matti]; I get to watch and sometimes write about it. Along the way we’ve met some of our hero bands including Black Veil Brides, Nothing More and Like a Storm. It’s nuts. We’ve covered bands like Slash and Myles Kennedy, Frank Iero & the Cellabration, Six A.M., Marilyn Manson, The Pretty Reckless, Breaking Benjamin, Motionless in White, and a ridiculous amount of others for Music Existence.

We’re hoping to expand our careers deeper into the industry, and maybe actually get paid for this stuff (imagine that, not working for free.)
Anda and Maru at work

Anda and Maru at work

Meanwhile, I was featured as the face of an album for New Jersey band A Midnight Tragedy, as well as in one of their music videos - where I definitely proved to myself that I can’t act for nothing, but I still enjoy getting covered in make-up and blood. So it was a lot of fun.  (See pic below right from the video shoot.)
Maru-Light tattoos
Let’s see, I also fell down the tattoo rabbit hole.

Someone once warned me that if I started with ink, it would become an addiction and I’d throw away all my money.

I didn’t believe them. I should have.

I’ve been steadily getting inked for a few years now.

Last spring I began what’s turning out to be almost a full back/side/eventually leg piece, which is nuts because I never planned that, but it’s happening.

I got a raven inked on my ribs over the summer, and it was seriously the worst pain of my life, but somehow a proving grounds.

In the end, I think I’m just a masochist because I can’t wait to go back and keep getting work done.
A Midnight Tragedy/Maru-Light
Right now Anda and I are planning our first trip to London in the spring. Gonna hit up all the Jack the Ripper and Sherlock Holmes haunts, because we’re morbid, and maybe even track Matti down for some tea. [Kettle's on - Matti] Definitely looking forward to it, since we’ve been writing about it forever, but have yet to get the full experience.

As for Death Note, every now and then I really miss it. I itch to cosplay Kira and L again, but then I realize my wigs have gone the way of the dodo and I’m just not in the mood to duct tape my boobs down anymore. I still miss writing about them too, but my heart’s moved into another creative universe and I’m committed to seeing it through.

For now, Anda’s in the kitchen cutting onions for soup and has managed to burn even my eyes here in the next room. So I’m going to cut this short, and when my ability to see comes back, I’m going to binge some episodes of Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Squad Six Cosplayers Share Their Thoughts on How to Cosplay Kira

5/2/2016

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note's Misa, Matsuda and Near

Lara, Justin and Lindz from Squad Six Cosplayers as Misa, Matsuda and Near

We've been scouring the fandom to find Death Note cosplayers willing to share their expertise on assembling Kira costume.

Not all of them have actually cosplayed Light, but they will have the necessary know-how to go about it, should they wish.  And they are here to advise you on doing the same.

Kicking us off
Squad Six Cosplayers!

Squad Six Cosplayers are a collective based in North Carolina, USA.  They recently hosted a Death Note panel at Ichibancon 7, and kept a diary here at Death Note News to let us know how they went about organizing it.  The group are known for making all of their own costumes from scratch, including a recent venture into Death Note cosplay for the panel event.

You can catch up with them on Tumblr or Facebook, but first they have some questions to answering about how they would go about cosplaying Kira.

Squad Six Cosplayers on How to Cosplay Light Yagami

Is there any reason that you haven't considered cosplay for Light Yagami?

The male members of Squad Six Cosplayers have not considered cosplaying Light. They have all been heard saying variations of
'Light is to simple and there are other characters that are more fun to portray'.

How would you go about creating a costume for Light Yagami?

Most likely we would buy a dress shirt because that's a complicated sewing process but we would defiantly make the tie from a matte silk  and  then make the blazer from a tan cotton and  the pants from brown cotton. Thought blazers are difficult, the lapels specifically, it always feels better to make your own cosplay.

What clothing and/or props do you feel are essential Light Yagami costume items?

At least the pants and the iconic red tie. A main focus of cosplay is to be recognized as the character so if you are cosplaying someone like Light you need to stick with his  recognizable outfit as well as a Death Note. Even though Light himself wouldn't carry his Death Note around, people see it and instantly recognize the cosplayer where as if you're in just a pair of brown pants, a white shirt, and a red tie people might think twice before approaching you.

Is there more to cosplaying Kira than the outfit?  (Look/behaviour etc.)

Oh yes! One of the biggest peeves about Death Note cosplay in general is when you hear people say that Death Note cosplay is lazy or easy. Cosplaying Light isn't just about wearing the right clothes and having the right hair or wig, you have to have that secretive but charming attitude too! No Death Note cosplay is easy and it does take time and money to make even the simplest of items.

What's your professional opinion about ready-made Light Yagami outfits, such as those in the Death Note News Cosplay Store?  Any other pieces in there decent enough for a Kira cosplay? (Be honest!)

The items in the Death Note News Cosplay Store are lovely and a wonderful option for those that do not sew. Another alternative would be going to a thrift store searching for the items. You don't have to make your costumes to cosplay, it's just our personal preferred method.

If not any of the above, where would YOU source items to cosplay Light Yagami?

The Death Note News Cosplay Store has a good option for a Light Yagami cosplay. You should never have to pay anything over 80 USD for a cosplay like his, not including the wig. Wig shopping can be difficult especially for men who have larger heads, so my advice on that is to be sure you know your head measurements  while you're shopping online and look for cosplayer reviews if you're buying from sites like Amazon. It's okay to go cheap with wigs but it's a personal recommendation not to spend less than 10 USD on a wig online because you want a decent head of hair and the more expensive the more realistic a wig is going to look.

Any last tips for anyone reading, who wishes to create their Kira cosplay from scratch?

Make sure to practice blazer lapels before trying to work on the actual blazer, pay attention to pants patterns because the waistline must add up, and don't be afraid to style a wig. A little cutting and a little Got2b hairspray will go a long way to making the costume go from eh to YEAH!

And, of course, yôkoso -
ようこそ.
Welcome to the launch of what promises to be a great and significant addition to the offerings here at Death Note News - our very first Death Note Month of... community event and on-going feature.

In particular featuring Kira Himself, as the subject of our inaugural Death Note Month of Light Yagami!

(It was so going to be Matt. I mean, it's his birthday! It should have been Matt, shouldn't it?)

So what can you do and what can you expect from this month long Light Yagami Death Note event?  Let me tell  you.  Though in some ways, you should be telling me!

What is the Death Note Month of Light Yagami All About?

The clue's in the title.  It's all about Kira, Light Yagami, Raito, Tsuki, or whatever other name the eldest offspring of Soichiro and Sachiko goes by these days.  Gami.  God.  Nothing.

Our Light Yagami Death Note Month of.. - as with any others forthcoming in the series - encourages everyone reading to share their own expertise, talent, know-how, opinions or whatever else they have on topic to send in.  We'll be posting all the anticipated artwork, fandom links, character analyses, recipes, stories, event heads up and Kira forum promotions that you send us, probably as they come in; while also creating lots of Kira-inspired content ourselves.

This doesn't replace the more general content of Death Note News articles, but runs alongside, in addition to all the rest.

How to Submit to Death Note Month of Light Yagami

The Cosplayer Chronicles: Squad Six Cosplayers' Death Note Panel at Ichibancon

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note News

We've been following the fortunes of
Squad Six Cosplayers,
as they prepared to host
Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary
panel at Ichibancon 7
in North Carolina.

Here is how they got on.

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note panel Ichibancon 7

Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary panel at Icibancon 7
Squad Six Cosplayers were at Ichibancon, one of the largest anime and manga conventions in North Carolina, USA.  There, in Events 4 room, we held our Death Note review panel - Resurrecting L - to mark the 10th anniversary since the manga's first chapter was published in Weekly Shonen Jump.

Since then, Ohba and Obata's story has become an institution, we hope we did it justice.

Ichibancon's Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary panel happened on January 1st 2016, at 11pm.  We should have finished by midnight, but the buzz was awesome and we were having so much fun discussing the new media developments for Death Note.  We almost ran well over time!

Here's how it all played out.  But first the cosplay and, created from scratch, a dress for Misa Amane.

Each of Squad Six Cosplayers' Death Note panel members arrived for the event in full Death Note cosplay.  Every part of which had been created especially for Ichibancon during the run up to the convention.

Founder Lara Sizemore opted to cosplay Misa Amane.  She explained, "I chose to do Misa's Last dress/suicide dress instead of her usual ensemble as sort of a nod to our title. It took me two weeks to complete the dress but I am very proud of it. The ribbons are all appliquéd on."  She makes it sound so easy.

As for the rest, they were in Death Note costume too!

The event was very well attended. Despite its late hour, three quarters of the venue was full.

It was great fun!  With a tremendous amount of audience participation too.

We had five grand prize questions with the winners awarded a very L-inspired Death Note prize.  It was a dessert glass with his iconic monograph printed on the side.

Inside was a pile of chocolate/apple flavoured candy, plus two bubblegums with wrappers sporting bright red eyes - shinigami eyes, if we ever saw them. In addition, those correctly guessing the answer received a packet of chips (crisps for our European readers) and an apple.

Nor were we the only ones in cosplay.  There were several others in the audience, including a few in Death Note cosplay.

Cayanna Carma Takes on Light Yagami for Ichibancon's Death Note Panel

One of our great coups was to have famed cosplayer Cayanna Carma as our special guest at the Death Note Ichibancon panel.

She is renowned throughout the North Carolinian cosplay circuit for the realism that she brings to her roles. Cayanna Carma didn't just dress as Light Yagami, she became him.

It was in the subtleties, of which no photograph will ever adequately convey, no matter how many taken of her in action.

It really felt like Kira sitting there, ramrod straight and charming. Watching everyone and reacting, as Light Yagami might believably react, to all that occurred.  Serious, even in the face of Sara's shenanigans as L.

Her presence went down a storm with the crowd, just as we hoped it would. In fact, many of those there might have attended simply to watch Cayanna Carma cosplay Kira.

Sitting alongside her on the panel, interacting like we were with Light Yagami himself, was certainly a pleasure for Squad Six Cosplayers.

Once again, we thank Cayanna Carma for being our very special guest at Ichibancon 7's Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary panel, and hope that these pictures provide some glimpse of what it was like watching our star cosplayer perform on the night.
They included the L cosplayer pictured left - our old friend Christian Morrison in costume and character - and another Misa Misa too.
Meanwhile, we technically had two L cosplayers on the stage with us.

After all, Logan was cosplaying as Beyond Birthday cosplaying L - Another Note does say that it took layers of cosmetics and a certain outfit before BB looked anything like the detective he was trying to emulate.  That's cosplaying!

With Sara there too, as our group's actual L cosplayer, having lots of fun with Squad Six Cosplayers' special guest for the evening, Cayanna Carma as Light Yagami.

Thank you for reading!

The Cosplayer Chronicles: Death Note Misa's Wig in the Spotlight

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note News Cosplayer Chronicles banner

As they prepare to host a
Death Note 10th Anniversary panel
at North Carolina's Ichibancon 7,
we get the updates on their progress in
The Cosplayer Chronicles
by
Squad Six Cosplayers

It's not just the Panel itself that needs to be organised.  We are cosplayers - reasonably professional ones at that, insofar as these things can be measured with oodles of fun thrown in as the main event - therefore we need to look the part.  Act it too.  As well as physique allows, Squad Six Cosplayers must take the stage as near clones to those characters we choose to inhabit for a night.

That in mind, Lara has spent the holidays working on her Death Note Misa costume.  She cosplayed the character before, hence knows that her old wig is not up to scratch.  One should not have to redo those derpy pigtails ten times an hour!

This year then, she will be entering Ichibancon with a thicker, better quality Misa Misa wig; totally replacing the old with something new.  It was expensive, but worth it.  Here's your sneak preview of the hairy part of Lara's Misa Death Note cosplay, as it was restyled to match Second Kira's locks.

Meanwhile, it's crunch time here with just a couple of days to go and all hands to the deck to make our anime con panel run smoothly.  Wish us luck!  And if you are attending 2016 Ichibancon 7, we'll see you there!

Squad Six Cosplayers will be hosting Resurrecting L - Death Note 10th Anniversary Panel at Ichibancon 2016, January 1st 11pm-midnight, in Events 4.

The Cosplayer Chronicles: New Timeslot and Exclusive Look at the Flyer for Death Note Panel at Ichibancon Anime Convention

11/12/2015

The Cosplayer Chronicles banner on Death Note News

Resurrecting L - an anime con panel celebrating Death Note's 10th Anniversary - is set to be held on New Year's Day 2016, at Ichibancon 7 in North Carolina, USA.

Gearing up to host it, and here journalling
their preparations along the way, are its organisers
 Squad Six Cosplayers.
It's been a fraught few days with technical issues, mostly surrounding internet access, but that's all over now. We're plugged in and raring to go with the first major bit of news being that Ichibancon has just released its official schedule.  We're on it of course, but there's a surprise attached. Squad Six Cosplayers' Death Note panel - Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary - has been bumped up an hour.

We're now on at 11pm, instead of midnight, on January 1st 2016.  Same venue, same room, just a different time.  A fine excuse to redesign the poster advertising our Death Note appreciation panel.  Though a frantic scramble to alert all who have already promoted it for us.

Next up is the flyer that everyone will receive as they walk into the panel.  You get to see it before they do!  It's a four page flyer, folded concertina style. In the box, on the inner page, is where a piece of candy will be placed for the guests to enjoy as we present. We'll also have candy and Death Note themed prizes throughout the presentation.  L eat your heart out!  We're resurrecting him indeed.

Is Matt a Biker?  And Other Tales from the Death Note Store

Screenshot of the current homepage for our Death Note Gift shop
Are you loving the Death Note Christmas gift shop gif that's over there on the sidebar being all festive?  Wonderful, isn't it?

Orangepunch created it for us and it's been gently snowing away in that corner, calling people in to remember that seasonal Death Note decorations do exist and all that.

Whilst also reminding me that I never did get around to finishing half of the stores that it's inviting people in to visit.  Plus some of them went up with way too big images attached to every pretty product, rendering them too long to load for the average sense of patience to withstand.  If it doesn't crash the prospective buyers internet first.

What can I say, I was young and foolish, followed by forgetful and lazy.  Swiftly introducing, 'Oh no! All of that should have been fixed months ago!' *cue pulling an all-nighter* into the bargain.  One unfathomably long night later, we have a much improved Death Note Gift Emporium (though granted, that might have been more useful a few weeks ago BEFORE you bought all your Xmas presents), plus some new departments entirely.

You will still find flaws in there (size of pics in DVDs and books pages, we're all looking at you), but I also found something quite intriguing to bring to the table.  Plus some gossip.

What's New in Death Note Gifts?

First let me run you through what's changed and sparkly new in our Death Note shopping area, plus a 'to do' list of what's coming up, so you can check if the issue you've found is already known.  If not, then naturally we'd be very grateful to get the heads up.

The front page (screenshot above) got a redesign.  The thumbnails were all much reduced in size, in order to boost the speed at which the page loads.  Hopefully it is much more navigable now.

In addition, every Death Note merchandise page has been reconfigured with funky tabs - making finding things at a glance much easier and again dropping that load time a lot!  Check them out in any department clicked below.

Death Note Decorations & Party Stuff

Death Note L Reindeer Nendroid
Our Christmas Death Note store has been checked over and generally spruced up.  Looking nice for the influx of customers following Orangepunch's nice, new banner.

But nothing much has been added nor taken away from what was in there last year.  That's not through want of looking.  There simply was nothing to put in and all the links were good.

Job done!

Death Note OSTs & Other Musical Things

CDs Death Note Songs
Completely revamped!  Every bit of music for Death Note that could be found - digitally or on CD - is in there; all of the images are nicely resized; and extra tabs have been added to take in new categories.

It looks lovely!  All that's needed are extra outlets to link in to give you all a bit of choice in your purveyors of fine Death Note musical gifts.

Meander in here for soundtracks from Death Note live-action movies or anime,  in addition to sheet music, other artists paying homage to Death Note, musical parodies and the like.
Visit Death Note Music Store
GOSSIP STOP!  In filling up those cyber shelves, I found several new Death Note tribute tracks by other artists, including two available for pre-order on release dates later this month or January.  They are both in our gift store now, but I will be hunting down the musicians and featuring them as separate Death Note News reports.  Death Note's 10th anniversary, TV drama or upcoming movies, appear to have inspired a veritable flood of them!  Happy days.

Death Note Cosplay & Costume Accessories

Store to buy Death Note cosplay
We've updated the selection of complete Death Note costumes to buy here - Misa's wardrobe really expanded.  In addition to the above, you can see what's on offer in cosplay Death Note wigs, replica notebooks, props etc.

The images here have been cut down. Each clothes rail should load immediately on all but the most ancient of potato-run connections.

To do: 1, Updates in other sections; 2 More places to buy Death Note cosplay items.

Death Note Manga & Other Books

The literary Death Note gift shop hasn't yet been touched.  It's on the agenda for today.  This is where you'll find all your manga, Death Note novels, guides, reference books, Death Note movie tie-ins and fun, coffee table type volumes.

To Do:  1, Reduce image size to make loading quicker; 2, Check for updates since last Spring, when it was filled with the latest Death Note literature; 3, Increase the variety of outlets for choice.

Death Note Anime, Movies and Other DVDs

Our video Death Note gift area also hasn't been looked at yet.  It will hopefully happen tomorrow.  Here you can peruse anime, box sets, Death Note live-action films and whatever else exists to watch.

To Do:  1, Reduce the size of images; 2, Update whatever may have been missed from Spring 2015 until now; 3, Add in more outlets for options on where to buy.

Brand New Character Collections for Death Note Gift Ideas

These next two kick start a whole new category in Death Note memorabilia - collections based on merchandise for Death Note characters.  I'm sure that most people choosing which characters to begin would have gone for Light and L.  But I know my readership.

Death Note Mello Merchandise

Gifts Mello Death Note
All the gift ideas for Death Note Mello fans - collectibles, t-shirts, figurines, magnets, pins/buttons/badges (depending where you live), cosplay Mello outfits, custom jackets, and things to stick on your wall (from posters through to fine art in a nice frame).

Even a fabulous piece of Mello bathroom decor.  I kid you not.

As in you will find all of this when our Death Note character Mello gift-shop is actually completed.  It's mostly done.  Still some rogue Mello phone cases to round up and slap within.

I'm giving myself a deadline of December 13th. For obvious reasons.
Visit Death Note Mello Emporium

Death Note Matt Gifts & Memorabilia

Gifts Matt Death Note
All  of the above - insofar as it exists - but as Matt Jeevas gifts, instead of Mello.  The main issue being that there are far fewer items of Matt memorabilia.

I can only assume the average manufacturer and/or retailer of exquisite Death Note souvenirs doesn't know a grand money-making scheme, when it grins at them from behind silver-orange goggles.

To a given value of finished - we've corralled the pretty Matt goodies from a single store into our own - the Death Note Matt gift store is done.  We just have to pad it out a bit with extra keepsakes sourced from other locations.
Visit our Death Note Matt Mercantile
Anyone want to prod us towards which character to compile a collection for next?   If there's no broad hints in any other direction, we'll default to Light Yagami and work through the series from there.  Though I'm half tempted to be perverse and go Sachiko Yagami instead!  Reckon there would be anything out there to buy in honour of Light's mother?

But this brings us nicely to the salient question with which I led.

Is Death Note's Matt a Motorcycle Enthusiast?  Or Just a Punk?

Matt in Death Note anime

In manga and anime, we only ever see Matt driving a car, but is that his transport of choice?
I know where my money is.  In fact, I've written twelve novels of Mello/Matt fan-fiction spelling it out - and one of them initially ran with the working title Cyberpunk.  Another had titles lifted from several Cyberpunk dictionaries and cultural references.  Matt in my universe ended up with a motorbike once, but we've barely seen it since.

Maybe that's because I've missed a trick.  In conjunction with most of the Death Note Matt fandom, I missed what was in plain sight, because I never thought to look certain things up.

Matt's gift shop was looking a bit sparse.  Mello's was jam packed.  I felt bad.  So I thought it would be a nice idea to hunt for that habitual Matt costume for Death Note cosplayers to buy, love and cherish.  After all, its probably the most ubiquitously seen, ordinary collection of clothes on any Death Note character. You could grab half the items in any given mainstream clothes shop.

Or could you?  It's harder than it looks, this cosplay malarkey.   I started with the gloves.  How do you search for those?  They're quite distinctive.  Racing gloves? Long, black gloves for men?   Finally, I found them.  They are officially known - in non-Death Note circles - as motorcyclist's gauntlet gloves,  or motorbike racing gauntlet gloves.

Next I went for the goggles.  Bog standard cyberpunk, I thought, with an option on steampunk, if that outfitting genre fell short.  Close, but no cigar.  Yet I was finding something similar, if not precise, in a whole new class of goggle sporting necessities.  Necessary, that is, if you happen to be a motorbike racer.  Like those wearing the gloves too.

Shoved some stripy, long-sleeved tops in and off into the jeans department.  Mmmm, several billion here, what to search in order to narrow this down?  Ribbed jeans?  Denim with circles around them?

Turns out that there are some jeans created specifically with patchwork patterns surrounding each leg - just like Matt's wears in fact.  They're made especially for bikers.  Apparently it improves their saddle grip upon the seat.  Saves them slipping about, as ordinary jeans might.
Matt and Mello in Death Note manga

Mello checking the manual to ensure that he is legally able to ride Matt's motorbike... possibly
So goggles, gloves and jeans all point due Matt the motorbike rider, with a strong nudge towards racing them too.  You going for that in your head canon?  Fan fiction writers, is that why he's beside a bike the first time we see him, and why Mello acquires one only after Matt's on the scene?  Death Note fan artists, what motorcycle does Mail Jeevas ride?  If this releases the throttle on anybody's muse, let me link the results, or show them  off here.

Or are you just going 'cyberpunk geek' like me, and dismissing this out of hand?  I'd be fascinated with your thoughts!

Daily Mail Attacks Misa Cosplaying Conservative (Mistakes Costume for 'Racy' Pics)

3/12/2015

Conservative activist Marina Muttik - Daily Mail December 2nd 2015

Marina Muttik in screenshot from the Daily Mail December 2nd 2015
The Daily Mail is running a scandal piece about a British Conservative politician (or three) and his bullying/blackmail tactics, which led to his victim's suicide.

Then they went after the politician's defender on Twitter, who just happened to be an attractive, blonde-haired lady.

Under the lucid headline, Tatler Tory and a very naughty blonde activist: Shapps was made a scapegoat over scandal, says campaigner (who loves to post rather racy photos on social media) (Daily Mail, Dec 2nd 2015), the 'news' paper attempted to discredit Marina Muttik - head of Bristol and Gloucestershire Conservative Future - because one cannot be pretty on Twitter AND hold valid political views regarding one's friends in government.

Marina Muttik doesn't need further discrediting. She's a Conservative.
However, then Britain's most insidious tabloid actually reproduced the Tweeted photographs of the young Tory campaigner, so that we could gasp in shock and outrage at someone in suspenders daring to express an opinion regarding politics.  Instead, every undiscerning Death Note fan out there (i.e. those daft enough to read the Daily Mail) and the folk catching it on social media later all frowned in abject familiarity.

Ms Muttik was wearing Misa Amane cosplay.  She was even holding Misa-Misa's replica Death Note.  The clues were there.  In a secondary cited picture, she's even got shinigami eyes, hopefully courtesy of contact lenses.

Thus raising a much more pertinent question - the British Conservative Party have a Death Note?  And a second Kira to wield it on their side?!

The Cosplayer Chronicles:  Ichibancon Death Note Panellists Squad Six Cosplayers Update on their Special Guest Cayanna Carma (New Column for Death Note News)

1/12/2015

Brand, new feature for Death Note News -  Squad Six Cosplayers keep a diary as they prepare for their Death Note panel at US anime convention, Ichibancon 2016.  In Death Note cosplay, of course!
Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note Notes The Cosplayer Chronicles
There's a lot of work to be done, if Squad Six Cosplayers are going to be ready to take the stage at Ichibancon - one of North Carolina's largest anime conventions - at midnight on January 1st 2016.  It's not only our Death Note panel in which we are performing, but out and about too.  On show just by being there, because we will be in full cosplay.

And those costumes need to be designed and made ahead of time.  We have a reputation to uphold.  It's not good enough merely to have those clothes fitting properly, we have to become the characters in our Death Note cosplay.  But in that, we've elicited a little help.

Cayanna Carma to Cosplay Kira at Ichibancon 2016 Death Note Panel

Cayanna Carma will be Squad Six Cosplayers' special guest at Ichibancon. Joining forces at our Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary panel.

She will be cosplaying Light Yagami for us, and we just know that will bring in a huge crowd.

Cayanna Carma is known through the convention community for her ability to encompass the attitude and personality of each character she portrays. She's just fantastic.  She's a 24 year old that can draft her own cosplay patterns, taught herself to sew, and can piece together shoes, props, pants, shirts, gloves, and even wigs with no issues.

Though Cayanna Carma will be taking on Kira at the Ichibancon anime convention, she's MOST known for her cosplay from Kuroshitsuji and Naruto. You can check out her ability to become each cosplayed character on her Facebook page, though nothing beats seeing her in action.

Now all Squad Six Cosplayers have to do is live up to that precedence too. No pressure then!

We all really appreciate this opportunity and are so excited to share our progress with Death Note News readers, because Death Note is one work of art we are all very passionate about.

Squad Six Cosplayers Host Death Note Panel at Ichibancon 2016

28/11/2015

How would you like to celebrate New Year with Death Note?  Lara Sizemore from Squad Six Cosplayers has been in touch to announce that attendees at North Carolina's Ichibancon anime convention can do just that.

Squad Six Cosplayers are celebrating ten years of Death Note with a panel hosted at Ichibancon 2016.  Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary Panel will take a look back over the whole series, review its updates, chuck around some Death Note related trivia and much more for the fandom to enjoy.
Ichibancon 2016 Death Note panel by Squad Six Cosplayers

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note panel at Ichibancon 2016
Squad Six Cosplayers are a well-known collective upon the US Eastern board anime circuit.  They've been around since 2003 and create all their own costumes from scratch. Their signature panel is Undercover with Kuroshitsuji, which also provides much inspiration for their most famous cosplay. The group ensure that their Kuroshitsuji cosplay is high on historical accuracy, which is fabulous for a qualified historian like myself to hear!

And now they're turning their attention to Death Note.  Happy days.

Ichibancon 2016 will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel Concord, in Concord, North Carolina, USA, between December 31st-January 3rd 2016.  Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary Panel will happen in the convention's Events 4 room, at midnight on January 1st 2016.
