The Cosplayer Chronicles: Squad Six Cosplayers' Death Note Panel at Ichibancon

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note News

We've been following the fortunes of
Squad Six Cosplayers,
as they prepared to host
Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary
panel at Ichibancon 7
in North Carolina.

Here is how they got on.

Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary panel at Icibancon 7
Squad Six Cosplayers were at Ichibancon, one of the largest anime and manga conventions in North Carolina, USA.  There, in Events 4 room, we held our Death Note review panel - Resurrecting L - to mark the 10th anniversary since the manga's first chapter was published in Weekly Shonen Jump.

Since then, Ohba and Obata's story has become an institution, we hope we did it justice.

Ichibancon's Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary panel happened on January 1st 2016, at 11pm.  We should have finished by midnight, but the buzz was awesome and we were having so much fun discussing the new media developments for Death Note.  We almost ran well over time!

Here's how it all played out.  But first the cosplay and, created from scratch, a dress for Misa Amane.

Each of Squad Six Cosplayers' Death Note panel members arrived for the event in full Death Note cosplay.  Every part of which had been created especially for Ichibancon during the run up to the convention.

Founder Lara Sizemore opted to cosplay Misa Amane.  She explained, "I chose to do Misa's Last dress/suicide dress instead of her usual ensemble as sort of a nod to our title. It took me two weeks to complete the dress but I am very proud of it. The ribbons are all appliquéd on."  She makes it sound so easy.

As for the rest, they were in Death Note costume too!

The event was very well attended. Despite its late hour, three quarters of the venue was full.

It was great fun!  With a tremendous amount of audience participation too.

We had five grand prize questions with the winners awarded a very L-inspired Death Note prize.  It was a dessert glass with his iconic monograph printed on the side.

Inside was a pile of chocolate/apple flavoured candy, plus two bubblegums with wrappers sporting bright red eyes - shinigami eyes, if we ever saw them. In addition, those correctly guessing the answer received a packet of chips (crisps for our European readers) and an apple.

Nor were we the only ones in cosplay.  There were several others in the audience, including a few in Death Note cosplay.

Cayanna Carma Takes on Light Yagami for Ichibancon's Death Note Panel

One of our great coups was to have famed cosplayer Cayanna Carma as our special guest at the Death Note Ichibancon panel.

She is renowned throughout the North Carolinian cosplay circuit for the realism that she brings to her roles. Cayanna Carma didn't just dress as Light Yagami, she became him.

It was in the subtleties, of which no photograph will ever adequately convey, no matter how many taken of her in action.

It really felt like Kira sitting there, ramrod straight and charming. Watching everyone and reacting, as Light Yagami might believably react, to all that occurred.  Serious, even in the face of Sara's shenanigans as L.

Her presence went down a storm with the crowd, just as we hoped it would. In fact, many of those there might have attended simply to watch Cayanna Carma cosplay Kira.

Sitting alongside her on the panel, interacting like we were with Light Yagami himself, was certainly a pleasure for Squad Six Cosplayers.

Once again, we thank Cayanna Carma for being our very special guest at Ichibancon 7's Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary panel, and hope that these pictures provide some glimpse of what it was like watching our star cosplayer perform on the night.
They included the L cosplayer pictured left - our old friend Christian Morrison in costume and character - and another Misa Misa too.
Meanwhile, we technically had two L cosplayers on the stage with us.

After all, Logan was cosplaying as Beyond Birthday cosplaying L - Another Note does say that it took layers of cosmetics and a certain outfit before BB looked anything like the detective he was trying to emulate.  That's cosplaying!

With Sara there too, as our group's actual L cosplayer, having lots of fun with Squad Six Cosplayers' special guest for the evening, Cayanna Carma as Light Yagami.

That's it for Squad Six Cosplayers!  I hope you've enjoyed our Cosplayer Chronicles on Death Note News.

Forthcoming Community Feature: First Names for Death Note Month of...

10/1/2016

What do you know?  What can you tell us?  What is your take on Death Note?

There is so much talent, skill and knowledge out there in the Death Note community that we thought it a shame not to allow room for expression.

Thus a brand new feature for Death Note News was conceived.  Now you get to see it born.

Every month, from February 2016, we will declare a new character, theme, item, arena or some other aspect related to Death Note.

This will be our focus for the whole fandom to contribute towards, should the muse and inclination take you.  It won't supplant our usual content, but augment it.  Nor will that be the last time that a subject might be covered, or community content be included.

The Death Note News Month of... category merely ignites a spotlight.  You will view more upon a given topic than normal, from a greater pool of contributors, for a solitary calendar month.
Death Note News Month of... Launch

First four names for Death Note Month of... focus:
Light, Matsuda, Wammy and Misa

What Content Will be Welcome for Month of.. Death Note Topics?

What have you got?  Bring out your fan-art; your links to the stories; your cosplay photographs, tutorials and places to make or buy.

Death Note academics!  Have you ever pondered a point, or thought it would be good to investigate and report back upon something within the genre?  This is your big moment to drag that vague musing out into the open and let the rest of the fandom share your findings.

Musicians!  Has something or someone in the manga inspired your compositions?  Do you have a kick-ass cover version of a theme lurking in your video channel?  Share with us. We want to hear!

Cooks, chefs, cocktail mixers and bakers!  Have you ever knocked up a Watari salad or a Sachiko Yagami soufflé? Bring forth your recipes, let us nom.

RPers unite! AMV collators, please link! Death Note video short makers, why have we not yet seen your stuff?
Death Note fun over good
Do you run a community, group, channel, stream, website or whatever else focused around a single character?   We want to know about that too!  Promote your place; publicise your event; bring us cyberspaces where we might gather, met and love what you have laid on for Death Note fans to enjoy.  No-one's precious here. Here is no rivalry. Think of us as your curators in this regard.

In short, if you've got it, we want to see it; if you make it, we want to wow over it; if you can conceptualize it, then this is show and tell time right here.

Come on, Death Note fandom, bring us what you've got!

How to Participate in the Death Note News Month of.. Focus

Take yourself over to the Death Note News contact page.  There you will find a form to email the editor with smaller items like links, information etc., or else discuss with her an idea that you have for the Month of...  event.

You will also discover a ready-made FileDrop box, wherein larger media - art, music, videos et al - may be submitted for inclusion in the feature.  They will be picked up and sifted through by the team here, then posted publicly for your fifteen minutes of fame and glory.   Probably on an 'as they come' basis, with no real waiting on ceremony.

Expect all the diversity in our collective scope and vision.

Death Note Month of... Names and Dates for your Calendar

Unwritten 2016
The inaugural focus for the next four months will be:

  • February 2016:  Light Yagami
  • March 2016: Touta Matsuda
  • April 2016: Quillsh Wammy/Watari
  • May 2016: Misa Amane

You may include anything vaguely related in each broad spectrum.  Like Wammy's House for Watari or moral imperatives for Light, or even the reality of modern policing in Japan for Matsuda.

If it can be crow-barred into the categorisation, we'll aid and abet you getting it in.
And if you really do have nothing, then please contribute anyway in comments and support.

It's anticipated that many of those sharing their work or thoughts with us aren't used to doing so in such a public forum.  They may be nervous as Hell and hoping just that someone reads, and comments, and likes it.  That's you, in the frame.

Good luck, good fight and off you go!

The Cosplayer Chronicles: Death Note Misa's Wig in the Spotlight

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note News Cosplayer Chronicles banner

As they prepare to host a
Death Note 10th Anniversary panel
at North Carolina's Ichibancon 7,
we get the updates on their progress in
The Cosplayer Chronicles
by
Squad Six Cosplayers

It's not just the Panel itself that needs to be organised.  We are cosplayers - reasonably professional ones at that, insofar as these things can be measured with oodles of fun thrown in as the main event - therefore we need to look the part.  Act it too.  As well as physique allows, Squad Six Cosplayers must take the stage as near clones to those characters we choose to inhabit for a night.

That in mind, Lara has spent the holidays working on her Death Note Misa costume.  She cosplayed the character before, hence knows that her old wig is not up to scratch.  One should not have to redo those derpy pigtails ten times an hour!

This year then, she will be entering Ichibancon with a thicker, better quality Misa Misa wig; totally replacing the old with something new.  It was expensive, but worth it.  Here's your sneak preview of the hairy part of Lara's Misa Death Note cosplay, as it was restyled to match Second Kira's locks.

First there's the front to cut short

Then the rest to arrange

Before finally the pigtails make it
recognisably a cosplay Misa wig
Meanwhile, it's crunch time here with just a couple of days to go and all hands to the deck to make our anime con panel run smoothly.  Wish us luck!  And if you are attending 2016 Ichibancon 7, we'll see you there!

Squad Six Cosplayers will be hosting Resurrecting L - Death Note 10th Anniversary Panel at Ichibancon 2016, January 1st 11pm-midnight, in Events 4.

Incredibly Difficult Death Note Quiz for Christmas - Apology!

29/12/2015

Death Note Xmas Quiz
Our ap0logies - it seems that we disappeared for the holidays along with a whole section of the questions for our Incredibly Hard Death Note Christmas Quiz!

No idea what happened there, other than the formatting was being a bit funky and was completed in a rush (after spending weeks collating the questions...).

Section 11-20 was present and correct at one point, but must have been accidentally overwritten and nobody noticed in the chaos of pre-Xmas preparations and partying.

I hope you all had fun anyway, fitting your own questions to the answers given at the end.  However, if you'd still like to try your luck with those set by us to tease your Death Note trivia knowledge, then the Incredibly Hard Christmas Death Note Quiz is now updated and complete.

Happy holidays all!

The Cosplayer Chronicles: New Timeslot and Exclusive Look at the Flyer for Death Note Panel at Ichibancon Anime Convention

11/12/2015

The Cosplayer Chronicles banner on Death Note News

Resurrecting L - an anime con panel celebrating Death Note's 10th Anniversary - is set to be held on New Year's Day 2016, at Ichibancon 7 in North Carolina, USA.

Gearing up to host it, and here journalling
their preparations along the way, are its organisers
 Squad Six Cosplayers.
It's been a fraught few days with technical issues, mostly surrounding internet access, but that's all over now. We're plugged in and raring to go with the first major bit of news being that Ichibancon has just released its official schedule.  We're on it of course, but there's a surprise attached. Squad Six Cosplayers' Death Note panel - Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary - has been bumped up an hour.

We're now on at 11pm, instead of midnight, on January 1st 2016.  Same venue, same room, just a different time.  A fine excuse to redesign the poster advertising our Death Note appreciation panel.  Though a frantic scramble to alert all who have already promoted it for us.

Next up is the flyer that everyone will receive as they walk into the panel.  You get to see it before they do!  It's a four page flyer, folded concertina style. In the box, on the inner page, is where a piece of candy will be placed for the guests to enjoy as we present. We'll also have candy and Death Note themed prizes throughout the presentation.  L eat your heart out!  We're resurrecting him indeed.

The Cosplayer Chronicles:  Ichibancon Death Note Panellists Squad Six Cosplayers Update on their Special Guest Cayanna Carma (New Column for Death Note News)

1/12/2015

Brand, new feature for Death Note News -  Squad Six Cosplayers keep a diary as they prepare for their Death Note panel at US anime convention, Ichibancon 2016.  In Death Note cosplay, of course!
Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note Notes The Cosplayer Chronicles
There's a lot of work to be done, if Squad Six Cosplayers are going to be ready to take the stage at Ichibancon - one of North Carolina's largest anime conventions - at midnight on January 1st 2016.  It's not only our Death Note panel in which we are performing, but out and about too.  On show just by being there, because we will be in full cosplay.

And those costumes need to be designed and made ahead of time.  We have a reputation to uphold.  It's not good enough merely to have those clothes fitting properly, we have to become the characters in our Death Note cosplay.  But in that, we've elicited a little help.

Cayanna Carma to Cosplay Kira at Ichibancon 2016 Death Note Panel

Cayanna Carma will be Squad Six Cosplayers' special guest at Ichibancon. Joining forces at our Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary panel.

She will be cosplaying Light Yagami for us, and we just know that will bring in a huge crowd.

Cayanna Carma is known through the convention community for her ability to encompass the attitude and personality of each character she portrays. She's just fantastic.  She's a 24 year old that can draft her own cosplay patterns, taught herself to sew, and can piece together shoes, props, pants, shirts, gloves, and even wigs with no issues.

Though Cayanna Carma will be taking on Kira at the Ichibancon anime convention, she's MOST known for her cosplay from Kuroshitsuji and Naruto. You can check out her ability to become each cosplayed character on her Facebook page, though nothing beats seeing her in action.

Now all Squad Six Cosplayers have to do is live up to that precedence too. No pressure then!

We all really appreciate this opportunity and are so excited to share our progress with Death Note News readers, because Death Note is one work of art we are all very passionate about.

Squad Six Cosplayers Host Death Note Panel at Ichibancon 2016

28/11/2015

How would you like to celebrate New Year with Death Note?  Lara Sizemore from Squad Six Cosplayers has been in touch to announce that attendees at North Carolina's Ichibancon anime convention can do just that.

Squad Six Cosplayers are celebrating ten years of Death Note with a panel hosted at Ichibancon 2016.  Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary Panel will take a look back over the whole series, review its updates, chuck around some Death Note related trivia and much more for the fandom to enjoy.
Ichibancon 2016 Death Note panel by Squad Six Cosplayers

Squad Six Cosplayers Death Note panel at Ichibancon 2016
Squad Six Cosplayers are a well-known collective upon the US Eastern board anime circuit.  They've been around since 2003 and create all their own costumes from scratch. Their signature panel is Undercover with Kuroshitsuji, which also provides much inspiration for their most famous cosplay. The group ensure that their Kuroshitsuji cosplay is high on historical accuracy, which is fabulous for a qualified historian like myself to hear!

And now they're turning their attention to Death Note.  Happy days.

Ichibancon 2016 will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel Concord, in Concord, North Carolina, USA, between December 31st-January 3rd 2016.  Resurrecting L: Death Note 10th Anniversary Panel will happen in the convention's Events 4 room, at midnight on January 1st 2016.

Can't get enough Hal Lidner?  Sick of hunting in vain for some Misa/Takada yuri?  Wish you saw more fan love for Shoko Himura?  Your time has come.

For the second year running, Death Note Ladies Appreciation Weeks will be hosted on Tumblr over the Christmas period. It aims to throw a spotlight on those under-rated female characters from Death Note.
Death Note Ladies Appreciation Weeks 2015 on Tumblr
Under the heading Expect the Unpredictable!, Tumblr user ComplicatedMerary announced the site wide event, and highlighted the guidelines for those who wish to participate.

Beginning on December 13th 2015 (Mello's birthday!),  Death Note Ladies Appreciation Weeks spans the holiday period to end on Boxing Day, the day after Christmas.  Until then, the Tumblr event will be divided into distinct halves.

Week One (Dec 13th-19th) is given over to Death Note yuri.  Each day is devoted to two bespoke pairings, with the final one a yuri wild card for the female Death Note couple of your choice.   Week Two (Dec 20th-26th) similarly features a daily focus. This time the limelight falls upon individual Death Note women. Two named in any given day, before that too ends with a wild card.

Dec 26th is the day for highlighting your favourite female Death Note character.

Hop on over to Tumblr to learn more about it.  Contribute, or merely sit back and watch the ladies of Death Note fill the website in glorious array.

Looking to debate Death Note with fellow political scientists and sociologists?  If you're a student or associate of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, you can do just that with an event scheduled for later this month.
UNAM debate on Death Note Nov 17th 2015

Death Note analysis and debate promo
for Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México
Death Note is the subject of the first in a month long analysis of anime at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).  Members of the prestigious university's Political and Social Science Department (Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales) will be meeting to debate aspects of the show.

Their Death Note analysis and debate event will be held on November 17th 2015, at 1pm, in the Lucio Mendieta y Núñez Room, at UNAM's campus in Mexico City.

It's unclear whether members of the public are also free to attend.  If you wish to participate, then contacting the faculty itself may be the way forward.

If you find out - on behalf of everybody else - please do report back and we'll update this accordingly.

Masataka Kubota: Best Actor Award for TV Death Note's Kira

Masataka Kubota Best Actor 86th Television Drama Academy Awards

Masataka Kubota Best Actor
for Kira in Death Note
Death Note actor Masataka Kubota clinched the title and trophy for Best Actor in Japan's 86th Television Drama Academy Awards.

He won the award for his portrayal of Light Yagami in the 2015 TV drama Death Note.

The Japanese Drama Academy Awards are organised by My Television Weekly magazine. Unlike famous counterpart galas elsewhere - like the Oscars - they are held quarterly and without any great, spectacular ceremony.

A triparate pool of the magazine's own jury, assorted television journalists and the general public - all nominating and voting - each determine the winners for each category.  The trio's results are then collated into an final overall score and ultimate ranking.

In an 86th Drama Academy Awards which otherwise saw Democratization sweep the board, Masataka Kubota held off two of that show's leading actors in order to take the top spot trophy.

According to the judges' comments, his transformation from 'mediocre' student to manically obsessed killer was how Masataka managed to impress as Kira. It was an 'acting of the eye', echoed in his 'eerie' facial expressions, compelling all to keep watching to witness the 'gradual flowering of its genius'.

Masataka Kubota's Kira took first place as Best Actor in both the public vote and the TV reporters' panel. My Television Weekly's in-house jury had him positioned fourth.

Masataka Kubota Best Actor Speech at the 86th Drama Academy Awards

Unfortunately without subtitles, here is how Masataka Kubota received his Best Actor Award for Light Yagami in Death Note 2015 television drama.
If anyone would like to proffer a translation - or the general gist in summary - we'd all be very grateful.

Japanese readers may also enjoy Walker Plus's interview with Masataka Kubota upon winning Best Actor for playing Light Yagami. No-one else will, as the translation programs absolutely scramble it beyond all comprehension. Yes, we'd love to know what he said there too.  Thank you in advance.

Kenichi Matsuyama Also Placed In 86th Best Actor Category

Of further Death Note interest was the presence of Kenichi Matsuyama in the running for Best Actor, usually right behind Masataka Kubota.

Which is probably quite ominous in the Death Note fandom mind, considering that Kenichi is best known to us as L in the live-action movies.

However, in this instance, he was there for his role in the Japanese drama Dokonjō Gaeru.

The readers voted him second; the reporters fifth; and the magazine staff placed him at joint second with Democratization's Kenichi Endo.  Nevertheless, Kira won this round.

Kento Yamazaki as Death Note's L

Wondering otherwise where Death Note came in the Television Drama Academy Awards?   It was there, but to no great array.

My Television Weekly's readership voted the Death Note TV drama second in the Best Show category.  But neither the magazine's jury nor television journalists factored it in at all.  Death Note didn't place overall.

The readers also placed two Death Note actors in the Best Supporting Role category.  Kento Yamazaki came fourth as L, while Yutaka Matsushige's Soichiro Yagami found fifth place.  But neither they, nor any other actor from the drama featured elsewhere, thus missing out on the collated acclaim.

Beyond that, there were no other accolades for Death Note (2015) in the 86th Television Drama Academy Awards.

Congratulations, Masataka!

Free Comic Giveaway in Global Halloween Comic Fest 2015

Halloween ComicFest 2015 logo
This might be worth checking out.  At the very least, it's free comics from participating stores on October 31st - L's birthday.

I don't know if it has a damn thing to do with Death Note, but I had the heads up from Viz Media - the North American distributors for Death Note manga - so you never know.

We're taking about Halloween ComicFest 2015, held on October 31st (obviously), purportedly worldwide.

From what I've seen - granted, in a most cursory look - there's an emphasis on North American stores.  But I did chuck in my own local, non-American area into the store locator and came up trumps with two options from which to choose.  (Or visit both, if free comic greed overtakes my need to limit travel costs.  As it probably will.  I've been known to cross many, many miles in pursuit of a good story.)

The country list, while not exhaustive, does indeed appear quite extensive.

Death Note Cosplayers, Get Yourself to ComicFest 2015!

In addition to the bonanza in comics given away free, Halloween ComicFest 2015 will see other events taking on a global scale.  Most notably the HUGE and self-proclaimed GREATEST Halloween Costume Contest Ever.
Halloween Costume Contest ComicFest 2015
Also known as a fabulous opportunity for Death Note cosplayers to dress up, hang out, have fun and potentially get very rich on prize money.  Worth digging out the old costume glad-rags and giving it a go?

Or putting a Death Note cosplay together brand new with just two days to go - nothing like leaving it to the last minute, but at least it puts you ahead of the game in terms of the year's usual array of comic conferences and conventions.

If any of you do participate in this way, please do share your pics with us, so we all get to enjoy the greatness.  We might even feature them in a Death Note News gallery!

Here's Spiderman to tell you how to enter your Death Note costume in the contest:
Basically, you turn up at a participating store (with or without your cosplay in full regalia) and pick up one of the freebie comics in the giveaway.

Then take a photograph of yourself in costume holding said comic - it must be clearly visible, presumably for potential use in future marketing materials - before heading on-line to fill in the form and submit the picture.

Finally, beg, bribe, blackmail or otherwise persuade all of your friends, family and fans to vote for your entry into the competition.   Sit back and await riches, fame and fortune resting on the laurels of your fabulous Death Note cosplay.  (Or any other costume obviously, it's just that this is a Death Note  website, hence we're duty bound to push you in that direction.)

Oh! And send a link for your picture to us, or send a copy via our contact channels for extra international acclaim.  Good luck!

Game of Thrones/Death Note Crossover Cosplay by Magic Missile Studio

Crossover Arya (GoT) and Ryuk (Death Note) cosplay by Magic Missile Studio
This tremendous crossover cosplay for Death Note and Game of Thrones was snapped in Sydney, Australia.  It is the brainchild of cosplay collective Magic Missile Studios - though on a second look, the tag-line actually reads 'Photographer | Graphic Design | Video Games'.  With costumes.

Permission to reproduce the image here was given by Arya, aka prop and costume maker Dashy.

Our sassy, smug-faced female Ryuk was performed by fictional character - says so on Facebook, must be true - and cosplayer Nerdalina Ballerina.

You can enjoy more of her Ryuk cosplay, with plenty of extra crossover pics with characters from other shows or gaming worlds, in her Oz Comic-Con 2015 photo album.  They include another Ryuk Game of Thrones moment, as the shinigami crosses over universes to take the much contested Iron Throne.

Presumably having written off a number of Lannisters in her Death Note, in order to do so. Which can only save time for George R.R. Martin, who is very much prone to doing the same.

Bakuman at Japanese Film Festival 2015Bakuman at 2015
Japanese Film Festival
Tickets are being sold for the 2015 Japanese Film Festival, which will tour Australia and New Zealand over the next two months.

Though Death Note isn't on the programme, creators Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata still get a showing. Bakuman will play for the Japanese culture loving Antipodean hordes.

Their semi-autobiographical tale chronicles the adventures of author Akito and artist Moritaka, as they attempt to break into the Japanese manga industry.

This was Ohba and Obata's second collaboration, which came after Death Note had completed its run.  Their live action movie Bakuman will be the version screened during the 2015 Japanese Film Festival.

Bakuman will open in Brisbane on October 21st 2015, at 7pm, in the Event Cinemas, Brisbane City Myer Centre. Further showings there will be:
  • October 24th 2015, at 8.30pm
  • October 25th 2015, at 3.30pm
It then moves to Perth, where showings will be at Hoyts Carousel, Westfield Carousel, 1382 Albany Highway, Carousel. Those dates and times are:
  • October 28th 2015, at 6.45pm
  • October 31st 2015, at 8pm
  • November 1st 2015, at 4pm
In the meantime, Bakuman is off to Adelaide, where the movie will be shown at the Mercury Cinema, 13 Morphett Street, on:
  • October 30th 2015, at 7.15pm
Next it's off to Sydney, where the venue is the Event Cinemas in George Street. There Bakuman will be screened on:
  • November 5th 2015, at 7pm
  • November 10th 2015, at 6.10pm
  • November 12th 2015, at 6.10pm
In the midst of that, the Japanese Film Festival 2015 also squeezes in an airing of the movie at another Event Cinemas, in Church Street, Parramatta. That happens on:
  • November 8th 2015, at 6.30pm
Then it's the ACMI Cinema in Federation Square, Melbourne, for a showing on:
  • November 26th 2015, at 7.20pm
Before Bakuman's final Film Festival screening location at Hoyts Melbourne Central, at Melbourne Central Shopping Centre. They occur on:
  • November 29th 2015, at 6pm
  • December 4th 2015, at 6.30pm
Not much going on there for Bakuman in New Zealand then. Though, by necessity of staying on topic here, the focus has only been on Ohba and Obata's work. There's plenty more going on in the schedule of the 2015 Japanese Film Festival in both Australia and New Zealand.

Death Note Makes Top 25 Shows of the Past 25 Years in IMDb Anniversary List

16/10/2015

Death Note anime on IMDb Oct 16th 2015
Death Note anime on IMDb (Screenshot October 16th 2015)
The Internet Movie Database is 25 years old and to celebrate it's released a list of the top ranked television shows for each year during that time. Death Note made the grade.

The anime was the best TV show for 2006, according to IMDb, in its Top 25 TV Shows From the Last 25 Years listing based upon all-time user ratings averages.

Death Note achieved an average rating of 9.0/10 with 88,175 viewers voting. For the record, the anime is also currently ranked at number 33 for the best overall television shows. That covers all time without being restricted by years - or what else was aired during that same year.

Here is the full run down for IMDb's best shows on TV by year:
  • 2014 - True Detective
  • 2013 - Rick and Morty
  • 2012 - Gravity Falls
  • 2011 - Game of Thrones
  • 2010 - Sherlock
  • 2009 - Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
  • 2008 - Breaking Bad
  • 2007 - Flight of the Conchords
  • 2006 - Death Note
  • 2005 - Avatar: The Last Airbender
  • 2004 - House M.D.
  • 2003 - Arrested Development
  • 2002 - The Wire
  • 2001 - Six Feet Under
  • 2000 - Coupling
  • 1999 - The Sopranos
  • 1998 - Cowboy Bebop
  • 1997 - Oz
  • 1996 - Dragon Ball
  • 1995 - Father Ted
  • 1994 - Friends
  • 1993 - The X-Files
  • 1992 - Batman: The Animated Series
  • 1991 - The Adventures of TinTin
  • 1990 - Twin Peaks
Any surprises there?  Any that you watched, loved, hated or missed?

I'm personally thrilled to spot Father Ted on there - another big favourite show of mine - plus happy to see such a strong anime presence alongside Death Note. I also really enjoyed Coupling at the time, but I'm surprised to learn it was the biggest show of that year.
