Light Cast in US Death Note Live Action Movie; Filming Begins Spring 2016

Wow! You daren't take your eyes off the latest Death Note news for an instant today. It's all go!  Major stories cropping up everywhere!

Right now, it's the turn of the Adam Wingard directed US Death Note movie.  Showbiz magazine Variety has just (September 29th 2015) run a story claiming the the long awaited Hollywood adaptation of Death Note is close to casting its Kira.

Californian singer/actor Nat Wolff will play Light Yagami in the USA - as long as 'final negotiations' with the film-makers continue just as planned.

This is going to get confusing fast, as it seems the Death Note US film is due out in 2016. At least production is purportedly starting Stateside during next Spring.

That's in addition to Death Note 2016, which is the Japanese Warner Bros./Nippon TV movie, directed by Shinuke Sato.  As the working title suggests, we're expecting that to hit cinemas (or theaters, if you prefer) sometime in 2016.

Yep, you wait years for a Death Note live action film and two turn up at once.

Sounds like another Death Note news story to me. I'll check it out. Unless you fancied guest writing a piece about this?

This movie WILL be bad. I mean; it's been written by the man behind "Fantastic Four's" brilliant script... and I thought Dragonball Z fans had it bad after "Dragonball Z Evolution". They can only milk the Death Note cash cow so far it seems.
Casting Light as white is stupid; it's such an Eastern story by nature that it only makes sense to leave it Japanese. But apparently Western audiences won't accept anything that isn't white...

It is a shame that they can't cast a Japanese actor - or American of Japanese ancestry. Though that would involve the whole cast too, as they're all Japanese in the original (give or take the Wammys and FBI). As for the movie itself, I'll wait on to see it before judging. The TV drama turned out to be a refreshing change.

I haven't seen Dragonball Z. From what I've heard, that is a good thing.

I was apauled at first I'm not going to lie here I was angry, but I can not blame Adam on one simple fact. The studio has the last say when someone is cast. I thought about this whole situation and talked about it with a friend of mine. He was equally off put by the casting but reminded me this film although sharing the name of death note and character names may not exactly be the movie we are expecting. This movie may be trying to reach a new generation of viewers, while we may have the mindset going in saying it should be one way they may surprise us.(unlike dragonball evolution. No surprise there.) I am holding out though until the final cut of this film only then will we truely know if we can trust this studio as well as Adam with more.

Given the way that the studio tried to batter Shane Black into submission, I don't hold out much hope of Warner Bros treating Death Note respectfully. Who knows why he left.

Worse case scenario is that he couldn't stomach yet another unpalatable demand, but Adam Wingard could. In which case I really fear for the final output.

But that's just being sensational (at best) and cynical (at worst). We can't know until the final cut comes and then we may be pleasantly surprised.
