Death Note Movie: Shane Black Out; Gus van Sant on Board as New Director!

9/7/2014

Director Gus van Sant
There's finally news about the Death Note movie!  Just a couple of weeks after I did the round up about the information so far, there's something actually new to add.

After all this talk of Shane Black's excitement and defense of the Death Note film, it seems that he's now been ousted as director. The Tracking Board has reported that Gus van Sant has taken up the reins instead.

Gus van Sant is most famous for his movies Good Will Hunting and Milk. Coincidentally, I watched Milk just recently and raved about it with everyone that I know. It certainly promises that the director will find the depths in Death Note.

As far as I can currently ascertain, the script produced by Shane Black, Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry is still that on the table. I do hope so, because otherwise Warner might push for their alternative script, where Light was the good guy with a poor upbringing/trauma leading to his dodgy choices.

However, there is hope in that he remade Psycho once, and did that practically shot by shot identical to the original black and white one.

I've just realised that he was also the director of My Own Private Idaho. Huge grin here. That's one of my favourite films of all time!  I'm definitely feeling good about him doing Death Note.

According to Gus van Sant's profile on IMDb, there are some trademark things that we can therefore expect for the Death Note movie too:

  • Music by Danny Elfman (works for me!)
  • Casting Matt Dillon, Matt Damon, Keanu Reeves, James Remar and/or Grace Zabriskie (time for us to start picking out roles for them)
  • Arty shots of cloud formations (possibly when the Death Note falls to Earth?)
  • End credits over home video footage (... Yagami household when the kids were little?)

More as soon as I know it!

Van Sant? This will be interesting!

Precisely what I was thinking! I was excited just to get news, then when I realised which director is in the frame, over-excitement ensued. I guess he'll be leaving the homo-eroticism in then...

I know that this is just a cosmetic issue, but how do you think Van Sant will pay homage to the Japanese origins of Death Note? Could we expect to see Asian actors?

I think it's more than a cosmetic issue. It should happen. Yagami, Misa and the task force (plus the whole cameo side of the first arc in Japan) should be played by Asian actors.

I doubt it'll happen though. Hollywood has a bad track record for that sort of thing.

Personally I would prefer american actors and the movie to take place in the US.

Reason 1 being we already have Japanese live-action film full of asians and reason 2 that I would be more immersed and identify with it more if it took place in the Western world since that is where I am from.

In any case about keeping hommage, there is no way that they would be able to pay proper tribute to the manga in just a feature-length film and keep all the fans happy, because of this I also hoped that it wasn't a reboot of Light's story but instead a completely different character that has a Death Note. Although I would love an american live-action Death Note that has the detail and fidelity of the Manga or at least the japanese movies (personally I hated Melo and Near, the ending of the Japanese movie was awesome in my opinion)

Enough ranting, I'm excited about more news of this movie.

Sorry about the delay in responding. I blinked and suddenly two weeks had passed.

You do make some good points about identifying with the character in a familiar location.

I could argue that I'm not in the US, hence a Japanese cast and setting is as relatable as an American one for me. But it would be Hollywood producing this, so a home-grown Kira would make more sense.

I'm trying to imagine a British Kira now - as that would be my point of identification - and that would seem suddenly a lot bleaker.

It's like how 'Suicide is Painless' was just a decent enough song, while it was the theme from M*A*S*H sung by an American singer. Then the Manic Street Preachers covered it. With a native accent, suddenly the song was downright devastating. I should imagine you find the reverse to be true.

I love your idea about the movie being from a different point of view. That would be amazing.

I'm not so sure about a 'based on Death Note' story line, unless it was really well done and kept the same general feel about it.

At this point, I think all of us would appreciate anything. It's been a very long time coming.

My husband and I have been married for 3 and a half years. In June it will be 7 years that we have been a part of each other lives. Recently he found out about a guy I slept with when we were separated and I did not tell him about. Before we got married we both agreed to let everything out and start fresh. I didn’t tell him. I was embarrassed bc the guy and I never actually had sex…just everything that led up to it. not to mention it was my brothers best friend and a huge mistake. well it came out recently along with some lies. A friend told my husband I cheated on him and I have never cheated on my husband nor would I ever. He is convinced I am a cheater. we have 2 beautiful kids and all I have ever wanted is a happy family. my kids and my husband truly are my everything. I can not see a future where my husband is not in it. I want to do whatever I can to save my marriage but I feel my husband is already set on the divorce. I know I could have been a better wife to him….a wife he deserves but now I fee like I have realized it too late. I look at my kids and I hate myself for allowing myself to break my family apart. I know my husband is not perfect and he has hurt me tremendously these past 5 years we have been off and on but we made it through for a reason. I love him and I want to save my marriage, one day a friend of my introduce me to a spell caster online who lift me up gave me hope and with-in 2 days after his spell my husband who told me he needed a divorce, called me and take me back home to me i must say today we are happily as one big family again all thanks to Dr joy a father and a real spell caster.Contact email address joylovespell@gmail.com Call him +2347088404185.
