Banner Death Note 2016 official twitter account
It has been an incredibly exciting week for Death Note fans, and now we find out that Takeshi Obata has been overseeing the artwork for Death Note 2016's brand, new shinigami(s) too.

On the 4th of February 2016, the official Twitter account - for this new Japanese live-action Death Note movie - announced the actors involved in the film, character introductions, as well as posting comments from Obata and Ohba themselves!

The comments, translated from the original Japanese, state:
Tsugumi Ohba on Death Note 2016 live action movie
“It will be interesting, and there is a possibility that more Shinigami will pop up because of the six Death Notes.

There is a luxury cast involved in the movie, and I’m excited to see how they will react to everything.  You absolutely can’t hold back the excitement.”
– Ohba-sensei

Takeshi Obata on Death Note 2016 live-action movie - tweeting Feb 4th 2016
“The previous work on the Shinigami was more realistic, but I think the atmosphere is a lot darker now.

The art of the new Shinigami was closely supervised. I am also looking forward to seeing the completed product.”
– Obata-sensei
Japan's new Death Note movie will be released sometime this year, and cast comments are available at the official movie website.

Death Note Movie Makers Gearing Up for Filming

6/2/2016

We have two Death Note films coming this year.  The proof is in the Tweeting.
(Incidentally the actual date for Japan's Death Note 2016 movie release is September 13th 2016, according to IMDb.)

Japanese movie Death Note 2016 starts filming

'Death Note 2016 begins! Thank you' reads this Tweet
from the official Japanese Warner Bros account
on January 6th 2016 - presumably referring to filming
Meanwhile, over on the official Death Note 2016 website:
Death Note 2016 lead actors
 The recently announced stars of Death Note 2016 - Sōsuke Ikematsu, Masahiro Higashide and Masaki Suda - have been commenting on their new roles.

Masahiro, who is playing Death Note researcher and investigator Tsukuru Mishima, notes that he's grown up knowing this story.  Therefore it's difficult not to be influenced by what has gone before; nor to avoid the pressure in getting it right.

He views the latest story as a three-way, intertwined battle between geniuses. He is enjoying making the movie and hopes that we enjoy watching it, including those discovering the story for the first time now.

'New L' Sōsuke - aka Ryūzaki - is also feeling the pressure: to live up to the legacy left by Ken'ichi Matsuyama in the earlier movies. He feels excited about filming and notes that every day the cast are directed in exceeding the standard of the day before.

This new Death Note story, he feels, contains the central message that human beings are weak and foolish creatures.

Masaki equally remembers when he was in the audience watching earlier Death Note live-action films. That makes it all the more thrilling to be starring in one now.

He sees in his own legacy a hint of Mello and Near in the original manga, insofar as his cyber-terrorist Kira worshipper character Yūgi Shion - plus the parts played by the other two - represent the successors, heirs or children of Light and L.  This is the movie equivalent of a Death Note second arc.

He hopes that their 'second half' story will surpass expectations laid down by the first wave of Japanese live-action Death Note movies ten years ago.

Personally they would have had my (tentative) vote straight out, if they'd just HAD Mello in one of these live-action movies.  And I don't mean disguised as a young schoolgirl.  We're all looking at you, L: Change the World and Maki.

Live Action Movie Cast of Death Note 2016 Revealed

4/2/2016

0 Comments

The three stars of the forthcoming Japanese movie sequel in the Death Note series have just been announced. Following on from Death Note, Death Note: the Last Name and L: Change the World, this latest film outing is tentatively called Death Note 2016.

It will feature three brand new characters to add to the canon dramatis personae:

Ryūzaki

Also known as L mark 2 (or should that be mark 4, seeing as we have to account for Near, Mello and Matt), Ryūzaki is a world famous, top-class detective lured into the spotlight by the emergence of no less than SIX Death Notes.

Shinigami are getting very careless these days. Or bored.

However, Ryūzaki isn't merely a Wammy kid grown old enough to get chucked onto the front line.  Like all the rest.  He's legitimately an heir of L, bloodline, genes and all.

No, this isn't a secret love-child that we've uncovered here. It's much worse than that.

Apparently L left behind a sample of his DNA, so that he might be cloned, into a global detective, called Ryūzaki.

This new Death Note character will be played by Sōsuke Ikematsu, known to the cinema going public as Higen in The Last Samurai and Kazuhiko Shingai in MOZU.
Sōsuke Ikematsu as Ryuzaki in Death Note 2016
Masahiro Higashide as Tsukuru Mishima in Death Note 2016 movie

Tsukuru Mishima

Ryūzaki is aided and abetted in this endeavour - and no doubt given the heads up re a sudden epidemic of Death Notes - by police researcher and archivist Tsukuru Mishima.

The spiritual (as opposed to genealogical) successor to Soichiro Yagami and his crew, Tsukuru Mishima specializes in artefacts from the Kira case that went before.

Ten years previously to be precise.

Therefore the investigator is well placed to recognize the reality of each new notebook dropped by a Death God in various locations around the globe.  He becomes the go to expert for all other authorities within stricken nations.

Or more likely, he does whatever Ryūzaki ends up directing him to do.

Tsukuru Mishima will be played by Masahiro Higashide.  The actor's other roles include Hideo Shimada in Parasyte and Kō Mabuchi in Ao Haru's Ride.

Yūgi Shion

And what's a Death Note story without a Kira?  Or in this instance, a Kira worshipping cyber-terrorist and/or hacker named Yūgi Shion.

Me and popular media don't often agree upon what constitutes a 'cyber-terrorist', but this time we may be in accord.

Yūgi Shion uses his computing skills and internet presence to not only locate all fallen shinigami notebooks, but also has some role in co-ordinating events.

He may or not be the individual already announced - in a snippet from the Death Note 2016 movie trailer - as being cloned from a shard of Light Yagami DNA.  Though how anyone got that is anybody's guess, particularly as they had to get through Near to reach the corpse.

Unless it was Near.  In fact, where is Near in this movie plotline now?!

Oh.  Movies.  He's an infant maths genius just entering Wammy's House as L was killed.  Not manga instigator of the Yellow Box pwning at all.  He should be just about old enough to be, well, Ryūzaki by now. Because the new L isn't a ten year old either.

Back to the actual plot - Masaki Suda will be playing Yūgi Shion; an actor also known as Karma Akabane in Assassination Classroom and Kuranosuke Koibuchi in Kuragehime.
Masaki Suda as Yūgi Shion Death Note 2016
Directed by Shinsuke Sato, the fourth in the Death Note trilogy (as was) is confirmed for theatrical release in Autumn 2016.  It is currently being filmed in Kobe - with one or two sneaky night shoots in the middle of Tokyo and occasional suburbs.  Moreover, there will be some international scenes, which will be filmed actually in the relevant foreign parts.

Any tremors of excitement building over this out there?

NOW Recruitment is Open for Death Note 2016 Extras - Tipped You Off Too Early

Warner Bros Japan logoWarner Bros Japan
It seems that I jumped the gun a little last week, when I posted something before it had officially been announced.

Ooops.

To be fair though, I wasn't officially tipped off either. Nor did anything intimate time sensitivity.

And information does want to be free.

I stumbled across the recruitment form for extras on Death Note 2016 and told you all about it on September 29th.  Warner Japan have only just announced it. Ahead of the game. Oh yeah!

Here's the Warner JP Tweet all about it, posted today (October 5th 2015):

【エキストラ募集開始!】『デスノート 2016』(仮)のエキストラを募集中!撮影は2015年11月初旬から12月末までの予定。都内近郊や神戸市が中心となります!ご応募はこちらから⇒ http://t.co/Hd5EVozFjt pic.twitter.com/Sj1Gajtsvm

How Would You Like to be an Extra in Death Note 2016? Recruitment Begins!

Mello and Matt Death Note 2016 extras
Extras for Death Note 2016 are currently being signed up by NTV and Warner Japan. Fancy giving it a go?

The live action movie only has a tentative working title at the moment. It will be the latest in the Japanese saga; a sequel to the previous films: Death Note (2006), Death Note: The Last Name (2006) and L: Change the World (2008).

Though the main cast has been assembled, their names remain strictly confidential.

However, we can now reveal precisely where filming will take place - mostly Kobe with some scenes shot in the middle of Tokyo, plus suburbs - and when - from early November 2015 through to the end of December.

Death Note 2016 extras may also expect:
  • provision for a friend or other travel companion;
  • food and drink supplied;
  • photography (still or video) strictly prohibited;
  • sharing details in blogs or any other medium also strictly prohibited;
  • 'strictly prohibited' means legal action taken and your backside dragged to court;
  • no stealing props or costumes;
  • applications accepted based on age, gender etc appropriate for each scene;
  • right to refuse an application retained with regard to the above;
  • shooting dates may be altered at the last minute due to weather conditions etc;
  • contacting the companies involved regarding your application is a no-no;
  • personal information provided in the form will not be shared with third parties.

These are all details given on the Death Note 2016 extra registration form.

For prosperity's sake, accept my screenshots of that form, as linked from the film's official website, captured on September 29th 2015.
So, are you signing up to be a Death Note 2016 extra?

L/Light's Heirs - Plot-line Details Leaked for 2016 Death Note Live Action Movie

26/9/2015

Death Note 2016 Trailer screenshot
The key points revealed about Japan's Death Note 2016 film are as follows:
  • It's not Light Yagami and L per se who are returning for the fourth movie in this saga. It's their 'heirs' or 'successors'.
  • DNA plays a part in passing on this inheritance. Whether that's metaphorical or actual, we don't yet know. Just that certain traits and characteristics of Death Note's main protagonist and antagonist are handed down to a new generation.
  • Nor do we yet know whether it's L's successor or Light's in possession of said Death Note this time around.
Beyond that, it's simply all confirmation that the project has been green-lit; Shinsuke Sato is directing it; and the 2016 Death Note movie will indeed be released in 2016.

But is this real information or merely rumour grown wild?

On the Trail of Truth and Conjecture in Death Note 2016 Storyline Leaks

Death Note 2016 Film
I've been watching news, regarding the newly announced Death Note live-action film, spread out across the globe. This has been replete with much speculation about the plot.

Nevertheless, I thought that all we genuinely had to go on was what we learned from the trailer after TV's live-action Death Note adaptation.  All else had to be Chinese whispers with each journalist and blogger building upon the rest, mistaking conjecture for fact and finding more in that trailer than had actually been there.

I was wrong.

Following a trail back from sites like iSchoolGuide, through the massively influential GameZone and Tokyo Otaku Mode, I eventually tracked an apparently pure strand of extra information back to Japanese website AnimeAnime. The Otaku Mode article is pretty much an English language translation of the latter.

Therein, under the unprepossessing title Production Announced on Death Note 2016 Movie (September 16th, 2015), the narrative seemed to separate information from the trailer and that gleaned from official sources elsewhere. But no source.

AnimeAnime linked back to the Warner Bros. website for Death Note 2016 (still very much a working title by the way).

I've scoured the site and cannot find much more besides the trailer that we've already seen, plus a rather nifty second index holding screen.

In short, it might all still be Chinese whispers, but they seemed quite adamant on the point over at AnimeAnime!

Mysterious Death Note Counter Clock Stops

Countdown to Death Note 2016 announcement

Death Note countdown timer ends on movie site
At 10.30pm GMT, the countdown timer came to a close on an official website normally devoted to Warner Bros. Death Note movies in Japan.

I caught the moment in .gif form above, but wasn't filming widely enough to capture the message that ultimately popped up.  (Nor did I start soon enough. I was sooo going to have this counting down for 40 seconds...)

Here's a still of the final screen:
Picture
And a translation from the wonderful Amaryllis:
There is an important announcement in the final episode of Death Note (referring to the drama)! Don't miss it!
Which is a little strange, as said Death Note television drama had finished airing several hours before, and I'd already blogged about the announcement.

Did somebody mess their timings up?

As expected, the website was counting down to telling us about a new Death Note film, set within the Japanese live action movie universe, due for release in 2016.  See earlier blog entry for more details.

Brand New Death Note Live Action Movie Coming in 2016 - Sequel to Japanese Films

Death Note 2016 announcement
A new Death Note story will be told in a fourth instalment to Japan's movie saga, it was announced today.

Ten years after the events in L: Change the World, six Death Notes are simultaneously dropped into the human world. Six Kiras arise in a bid to wipe out cyber-terrorism.

One of them will be Light Yagami returned.
Death Note Matt cyber-terrorist
Each of the Death Notes will naturally have a shinigami in attendance, thus adding an even more supernatural element to the tale.  Crucially, a 'six note rule' is triggered by such prevalence.  Though what that entails is yet to be known.

Death Note 2016
- its working title - will be produced by Nippon and distributed worldwide by Warner Bros.

This is what that mysterious countdown was all about, and what was announced after the Death Note television drama completed its final episode in Japan tonight.

Fourth  Live Action Death Note Japanese Movie in the Offing?

11/9/2015

A rather intriguing countdown timer has appeared on the official Warner Bros website for their Japanese live action Death Note films.
Gif showing the timer on the Japanese live action Death Note film site Sept 11th 2015

Countdown on the Death Note live action movie website
- gif captured on September 11th 2015
Ordinarily, the site is dedicated to the earlier trilogy of Death Note movies - Death Note (2006); Death Note II: The Last Name (2006); and L: Change the World (2008).

They were all distributed by Warner Bros., with the first two produced in conjunction with Nippon Television (NTV).

This is significant, as the timer on that website runs out on September 13th 2015, at 10.30pm Japanese time.  Also known as the moment when the final installment of NTV's Death Note television drama finishes airing.

In short, the small screen climax will coincide with whatever news for the big screen this will bring.  A double w(h)ammy for Death Note fans then.

Naturally I've checked the source code to see what clues might lie in there. Nothing much. Just a plain, old page with the apple icon bouncing and the countdown completing.

Its meta tags are all in Japanese, but for one English language rendering of the title Death Note and the words 'movie, trailer'. Which are repeated in the native tongue too, alongside the kanji for Yagami, Light, Raito, Kira, Shueisha, Nippon Television, NTV, official, film, Warner and Warner Bros.

All of which could pertain to the content this counter replaced.  Or might not.

The current buzz, across the fandom and anime/manga news sites, is that we're about to see a fourth Japanese live action Death Note film announced. But it's all speculation at this juncture.

What do you think?

What is the 10th Anniversary Death Note Project?

24/2/2014

2 Comments

Death Note 10th Anniversary website
By now the whole Death Note fandom is agog at the notion that something new is coming. But what is it?

The first hint was posted in
Shueisha's Jump Remix of the Death Note manga. In the fifth edition, an advertisement was posted on the underside of the fly cover. It stated that there was a 'special project' coming soon to mark Death Note's 10th Anniversary.

That was followed up quite sharply by the appearance of an intriguing website.

The site displayed a countdown towards March 3rd 2014 - the same date heralded in the manga advert as the launch date of the 'special project'. The Death Note website featured a familiar black notebook, with the legend warning us that '
'If you touch this note, your memory will revive''.

Naturally every Death Note fan in the known universe touched it. It would take more than the cautionary tale exhibited by Raito Yagami to see us off.

Yet all we got for our troubles was an image of Ryuk flashing into view. All...

Mmm... so what it's all about?  The main buzz on the internet seems to be that a new edition of the original manga will be issued. But that's been done several times during the intervening ten years. It's already happening with the Jump Remix right now.

Others have guessed that the Death Note anime will be remade. Does it really warrant that? The extant one isn't very old, and it's hardly dated. It's just about perfect as it is.

Could it be a new story being written as we muse in anxious anticipation? Perhaps a stand-alone tale updating us on the fortunes of those left alive, or following through on ambiguous clues that Light himself is now a shinigami. Maybe even a whole follow on series, wherein another person picks up a Death Note and Near scrambles a squad to hunt that new Kira down.

Or another live action movie following another tangent not covered in canon?

The most potentially disappointing scenario I've heard is that it's merely a countdown to an official announcement of Death Note the Musical. But we already know about that. It wouldn't be any surprise at all.

How about you? Have you any major guesses that haven't already been covered here? There's surely little that it could be!
